New Carb Running hot at idle
so i put on a rebuilt carb its a qjet and i dialed it in to what seems to run pretty good, but ever since i put on this new carb my engine temp rises at idle when at stoplights and what not from about 190 to 200, and my temp switch is in the block just above the manifold so i think the temps read about 10 higher than they actually are, at least according to a digital temp reader. Is this normal? i am worried cause i live in phoenix where it gets hot as hell and if it is doing this in the winter i don’t want to see what happens when i am sitting at a stoplight and its 105 degrees out! does it sound like i am running to rich or lean on my fuel mixture or idle? Has also been sputtering and running for a few seconds after i turn it off....like its angry i am not going to drive it more! my idling oil pressure seems to fluctuate, sometimes its 30 sometimes its 40 then when i drive its up around 60-70. thanks for the help it is a newly rebuilt engine with about 700 miles on it.

Re: New Carb Running hot at idle
Good Morning,
Usually speaking an engine that continues to run after the ignition is turned off indicates ignition is too far advanced. Check your timing. Advanced to far can also affect engine temps. Bad gas and low octane can also contribute to this. God Bless, Terry |

alright thanks ill look into that, didnt even consider it because i just set the timing about 2 weeks ago. So should i run 89 octane? i have been using 87.

Re: New Carb Running hot at idle
Almost guaranteed it's not the carb. too many other possibilities.

Re: New Carb Running hot at idle
You have a vac leak. Check the carb gasket with a can of spray cleaner while the engine is running. If the idle changes, you have a leak.
