65 gmc rearview mirror
Does anyone know how far up from windshield ledge the rearview mirror arm is suppose to mount? My 65 gmc apparently has never had the mirror mounted on the cab.I guess it has always been mounted on the glass itself. Is this common on these trucks?

Re: 65 gmc rearview mirror
My 65 didn't have an inside mirror either, I just measured from side to side and found the center. Then held the mirror and mount in my hand and found the best height then marked it, the main thing is you want to be able to see good behind you. Vernski

Re: 65 gmc rearview mirror
I don't think the glass mounted mirrors had been developed by 1966. I think these trucks either did or didn't get an inside mirror depending on if it was originally intended to have a camper, or something else blocking the rear window. My 60 didn't have an inside mirror when I bought it either. The original owner installed a camper shell, and it had the west coast jr. mirrors on the doors. I mounted an original metal arm with an original but very tired mirror on mine the same way as Vernski - found the center and then gauged the height by how well I could see out the back window.
After later spending something like $70 on a new reproduction arm and mirror, I got fed up with the reproduction mirror and changed to the type that glues to the windshield. The problem with most of the reproduction flip mirrors is they don't flip "straight". When flipped to the night position, the mirror changes angles (it flips crooked), and the sight picture isn't level requiring a readjustment of the mirror every time. Original 60's mirrors I've owned all flipped straight. I'm now using a cheap Walmart glue on mirror instead. It's closer to the the same shape of my back window, and when it is flipped to day or night, the view out the back is still level and straight. |

Re: 65 gmc rearview mirror
here is where I put mine:
I measured off another truck that had one from the factory.. the bottom screws are 1/2 inch from the rubber, and each side is 28 1/2 inches from the door jamb (on the 28.5 measurement, just make sure the mirror is centered....) I just put a mirror on my 63 as well. take the measurement from the seam where the roof piller meets the roof skin. I used a 1/8 inch drill bit, seemed to be the right size for the screws i had.
