how rare is the fiberglass spare tire cover with the chrome ring? im talking for stepside trucks with the spare tire cutout in the rear fender. was the cover even an option or just something a previous owner put on my truck?

I'm positive (dangerous statement) that was never a factory option. However, it may have been an odd dealer perk not sanctioned by GM.

i saw one just like it on a 60-66 model stepside the other day, so maybe it was an option for them but not for the later trucks

I'm pretty sure CPNE is right, it wasn't a factory option. You can get those out of JC Whitney for not a lot of money. Here you go
