transmission help

I have a stock three speed trans on my 69 SWB w/250. Now that I am driving it a little more, I noticed that in humms when I'm on the highway. Does anyone know what the problem may be? It doesn't grind when you shift and it doesn't slip from gear so I know the synchros are okay but could it be a bearing? I also noticed that there is no transmission crossmember. Is that okay too? thanks for your help.

Re: transmission help

There is no cross-member on the 3 speed. It just hangs off the bell-housing. As for the noise, have you checked your oil level? It could be low. Or just gear whine.

Re: transmission help

I topped it off when I purchased it. I too was hoping that was the culprit but no improvement. I think its the bearing but I dont even know where I could buy one from.

Re: transmission help

It is probably the driveshaft carrier brg. Unbolt it from the frame & spin it. It should not make any noise. It is normal for the trans not to have a crossmember under it. It looks odd, especially when it has the mounting ears under it, but that is the way they made them. It makes it easy to put in a new clutch.

Re: transmission help

If it is a bearing, it's most likely the input shaft bearing. Most parts stores should be able to get this for you. It's not too bad to replace. If I remember right, there's only 2 snap rings that hold the bearing in after you remove the collar for the input shaft.

Re: transmission help

Trans. noises are generally in the lower gears. If it wines 1st & 2nd & is quieter in 3 it will have some brg. problems in the trans. If the noise is in 3rd going down the road I would be looking at the carrier brg., rear end or wheel brgs.

Unhappy Re: transmission help

My truck doesn't have a carrier bearing. it has a one piece DS. I will check the rear end as I haven't even checked to see if it had oil. I'm taking the RE cover off to see if any oil comes out. thanks for everyones help.
