Angry 6.2 Diesel lovers, look away, this is gonna make you cry...

I hate to do this, but we all know what dumba$$e$ POs can be. Here is a shot taken under the '82 1/2 ton chassis I just picked up for my project ('64 GMC on 82 running gear and 6.2 engine). Thought I'd drain the engine before I pulled it. The radiator/hoses are long since gone, so all I had to do was pull the plug on the pan... Oh, he did admit he'd left it outside for a 'little while' with no air filter housing and nothing covering it. I managed to FILL the oil change pan... This truck has 130,486 miles on it, and I'll remind everyone that this was an '82, with red valve covers and pan...

Does this mean the engine is automatically trashed?

Wish it was diesel. It's water. If this engine's not totally trashed, it's gonna take a lot of work.
Love that engine! Want to trade?

fill the pan, and pistons with mystic metal mover and let it soak for a week, turn it over to make sure it's all free then pull it apart, it's worked 4 times for me with diffrent motors, I was able to salvage all 4 motors with just cleaning them up, honing the cylenders, replacing the lower end bearings and piston rings (and new gaskets of course)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA thats what mt 292 did when I tore it down, I had the truck sitting with no front clip on it for like a year out in the weather. I got 2 quarts of oil and 4 quarts of water.

Sweet. Where do you get the stuff? I just did a search, and didn't have any luck finding it.

Yeah, there was some black sludge that looked like it used to be oil that worked it's way out after the water.

Ok what are those brackets off of? I need some for my 6.2L that is going in my K5..
BTW, what I really need is the AC brackets. I am guessing 6.5L is my only option.

That sucks, but negligence can ruin anything. I know there is not a huge amount of 6.2 lovers on here, but I definitely am one.
If the water didn't freeze, you could salvage it, I'm sure. But with the 6.2 it's often cheaper to just pick up another used engine. They can usually be found for $250-400 depending on condition.

Yeah, I didn't think there were too many, but I spend most of my time hanging around the 60-66 forum, and it's sure hard to find one there! But it's all good - Chevy/GMC lovers are great people to be around whether they are diesel guys or gassers.
I grew up around gasoline engines on the family farm (with the exception of some tractors). FINALLY, dad got wise and tried a diesel truck when the last gas engine failed - on the farm they spent as many hours idling as they did miles on the road!
I've got a Duramax now, and married into a diesel-happy family - my father-in-law and brother-in-law love the 6.2s and 6.5s. My brother-in-law is going to be working on his '72 (one day) and wants to put a 6.2 or 6.5 in it. Since I'm building a '64 GMC currently, my truck is going to be the test subject while we do all the trial and error putting it together. Other than that, they've got several diesels, but nothing in a truck earlier than a 82.
I don't spend much time hanging around the 'diesel only' forums as I haven't needed much diesel information yet, but with this being my first 60-66, I have a lot of questions for everyone around here. I'm putting the front cross/rear axle under my truck out of the '82, so I find guys with expertise in every corner here.
Seemed to rattle on there, but really just wanted to say that it's nice to have met a diesel fan or two on here.

Re: 6.2 Diesel lovers, look away, this is gonna make you cry...

Ya, at least I know there is more than 1 diesel person on here now

The 6.2s aren't the most powerful, but the 73-87s are my favorite trucks of all time and I love diesels so when you combine the 2... you get the idea.

My dad bought a '77 K10 in '79 (way before my time), sold in early 90s, then in '97 (I was 4 or 5) we bought a '85 K10 305/700R4. I fell in love with the body style right then and there. We still have it, has a healthy 400 SBC now, but it's getting rusty. It was the first vehicle I ever drove and I hope to restore it someday.

If you ever need some 6.2/6.5/Dmax help, the guys on here are pretty good

And of course, the whole forum knows about me. Extremely in love with diesels. Especially 6.2's. I've probably started at least 10 arguments about diesel to gas engines. haha

That sucks man. Water in the oil pan is never good, even when the engine is torn apart for a rebuild.

I guess you can count me in too. I love the sound of a straight piped 6.2 with a good load on it. The perfect 73-87 diesel for me would be a 81-82 with a 2-stroke Detroit Diesel in it. Now that sounds like a heck of a fun work truck.

They're smellly, annoying slow, and I love every 25mpg minute of my 87. My 13 year old daughter wants it when she gets her license. Hook em early I say!

Huh? I had an 86 Jetta and it needed a windshield, the glass guy came and picked it up and said he was surprised as hell at how peppy it was. We used to beat civics in ours, and it was just a 1.6 N/A.
