Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
Team,
I've looked into the info on the VIN for my truck and can't find out why I have an extra number based on the year. The VIN stamped on the plate is CS1570C P7645A I get the CS1 but can't find get the 5 as a code for a 67. Then the 0C ??? The P is for Pontiac and then the sequence number 7645 for production. Any input on the "A"? I'm confused??? Also, the SPID shows an axle code of 1FS025 (as best as I could read it from the orig sticker being faded) Can't find any info on what the correct axle ratio is for this???? Please help! Steve

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
It's not a GMC, perchance is it?
CS157OC-P7645A C= 2 wheel drive S= L6 engine 1= 3,900 - 5,800 # half-ton 5= ? 7= 1967 [maybe] OC= Stepside,'67-'68 -= space for special codes NY, PA, MD P= Pontiac, Mich. Assembly Plant 7645= Sequence number after 1001 A= ? [could it be a '4' ?] GMC used a letter code for years: A= '69, B= '68, C= '67, Z= '70, 1= '71, 2 = '72. Just a stab at it. Using the LMC catalog p 10 chart. By no means accurate. In the Model ID numbers, '57' means 115" wheelbase (shortbed). Could it be: C= Conventional, 2wd S= L6 1= 1/2 Ton 57= 115" wb OC= Stepside ['67 + '68] - = nothing P= Pontiac plant 7= 1967 6454 = vehicle sequence number. --Or-- 7645 and "A" = 1969 ? Can't tell w/o seeing the truck in person. Maybe some real expert can chime in.

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
I'll see if i can get a shot of the door plate that is stamped to get some better visibility to it for the rest of the team to see.

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
C= conventional cab
S= six cylinder engine 1 = 1/2 ton 57 = cab to wheel base dimension which a 57 denote 42 inches 0C = fender side box space for state identifier if applicable - in this case its not. P = Pontiac assembly plant 7645 serial number A = 1969 It's an odd version.

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
Well I wasn't off by much. I was mislead because Rico mentioned 67. Chevy called it a Stepside but GMC called them Fendersides, or something. [And Ford called that bodystyle a "Flareside" if I'm not mistaken.]

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
based on the dash bezel and the front clip having the vertical "custom" badges I would bet a 67. The bed is off of a 68 with side markers. I bought the truck two years ago with a 77 sb350, a TH400 tranny from ??? and a 67 (i think) cab, and the bed a 68.

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
A '67 cab is most likely to have a small back window. However the large 'Panoramic" back window was available as an option on the '67s. '68s and later it was standard.
What would tell you it's a '67 would be the different style of locks on the vent windows. The pure '67 has ridged horizontal lines on it. '68s and later are smooth. '67 glovebox doors are wrinkle/ flat black. All this assuming the parts are original and unmolested. A Frankenstein truck would be more likely assembled according to builders' parts availability, as they come in or are acquired. Do the front fenders have side marker reflectors?

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
Vent window handles are ridgid and there are no front side markers.
SPID says lg panoramic window and customer appearance pkg or something like that

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
Sounds like a 1967 truck to me.
Do the parking lights go completly out when you pull the Lights knob all the way out? I wonder who else can try decoding your vin?

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
By your description I'd say 67 also with a panoramic rear view window option. The last letter in some vins, as in your case the "A" was to refer to a range of GVW as in the 60-66 vin decoding styles. "A" meaning 1/2 ton gvw range. That would work as its a 1/2 ton I'd assume, but there is really nothing to identify the year in this vin if thats the case.
Odd vin, its like they missed a letter.

Re: Extra Number/Letter in Vin???
So send it in to the GMC Guy. Then post his reply back here. I'm curious to see what he says.
