washer pump problem?
i tried the windshield washer pump today and it only squirted like 3inches then no matter how many times i tried didnt squirt again (full container of fluid) do i have to prime the pump? haven't used it in 4-5months if so how? is the pump worth rebuilding or are rebuild kits not worth it, im feeling that since it squirted at least once that its not totally gone so rebuildable, but im no expert. it did continue to make a clicking noise noise so sounded like it was working..any thoughts? thanks in advance

Before you condemn your pump, check the rubber hose from the washer fluid bottle to the pump. I've had 40 year old hoses split and suck in air and behave just as you describe.

I didn't use mine for about 5-6 months one time and I had to prime it, I pushed the switch about 10 or 12 times before it started working again.
But it still could be dead.

well ill check the hose and replace it to be safe try priming again and go from their i guess then i'll see how it goes today.

Interesting.....I tried this today and it started working, but only on the passenger side. At least I know my pump does work. I'll have to replace the hose to the driver's side and see if that will get it working, I only wish the hoses were a little easier to get to.

they make rebuild kits for them,i just rebuilt mine.works like a new one

Thought--they make a very simple aftermarket kit and sell it very cheap to bypass the original pump which is a ***** to get at--attached to your wiper motor way under the dash. You can install this aftermarket kit in about 10 minutes and your are totally functional. Only big difference is that YOU get to turn it on and off verses pushing the button on your wiper switch. well replaced the hose and did work a little now its a dribble out of each lol so im going to rebuild the pump, does anyone know whether removing the igintion lock is absolutely necessary? id perfer not to, i can see the pump threw the hole where my radio was it looks like an okay job... my manual said remove ign lock, that's why im asking.
also i didn't want to start a whole new thread so.. when i engage my hazards all lights work directional wise, but when i turn hazards off then go to turn right directional on only back tail directional works not the front, does that mean the turn signal switch is bad? thanks!! |

btw, thanks to everyone who answered this thread (and all my others)this board/forum is great, people always giving input and politely. many sites i've been takes days for one answer, or they just use your forum to argue with each other, leaving u right where u were when u asked he question the first time. again thanks

no you do not need to remove the igintion lock.I just drop the steering colmon
and that just gave me enough room to get the wiper motor to remove it.

If you have a non-AC truck you can just take the two or three bolts out that hold the washer pump to the wiper motor then you just need to unhook the left defrost hose off the heater box and it comes right out. Easier than pulling the whole wiper motor.

I put a new washer pump in my truck. It worked about 20 times. Then it stopped working. I put another new one in. It worked. A few weeds later it stopped working. I tried it about 20 times and it won't work. I can hear it pumping, but there is no fluid coming out. Where can I get a good after market one?

Hey, grs,
How is your wiper washer pump issue now? I have a 1966 C-10 and all I hear is the tap-tap-tap noise from my pump when I push the button for the washer. Following the posts, to see if there is a solution. One more thing, did Huck ever respond about the aftermarket option? Part number, source, etc? AnlaufJohn

I went to Napa and got an after market pump. Mounted it on the radiator support. Took the cowl off , and redid the hoses. Hooked it up to a toggle switch. It now works great.

I put in a remote conversion kit from LMC. I spliced into the wiring under the dash and it works when you push on the knob. I didn't pull the old pump, just disconnected the electrical. It was pretty easy
