Is it safe to run the truck with the driveline out?
Hey guys,
Here is a question that I don't know the answer to because I have never thought about doing it before. I just pulled the driveline out of my 72 C10 with the 350/TH350 to replace the carrier bearing due to the rubber being blown out, and figured I throw some new U joints on. I have been trying to track down a whine/humming noise under light throttle and was wondering if it is safe to run it in gear up to about 1500 RPM with the driveline pulled to see if the noise is the DL or if it is in the trans? I know we have done it with our offroad rigs after breaking a rear, we would drive out with only a front, but this was just cause we had to. Maybe a stupid question, just have never done it. Thanks guys!

When i bought my blazer the rear was out so we pulled the driveline and used it as a front well drive

No its not, With no yoke in the transmission the output shaft will have no support.

Re: Is it safe to run the truck with the driveline out?
Hey Leviticus
I'm doing the same thing on my 72 GMC. The new carrier bearing I got was not idential to the old one. The inner sleeve that is not attached is on the opposite side on the new one. My question to you is, which side of the carrier bearing are you pointing toward the front of the truck ? Not trying to hyjack your thread, but hoped you would have the answer. Thanks |

Re: Is it safe to run the truck with the driveline out?
since your doing U joints you could do it with Just the yoke...Just be smart about it with No load that thing is going to spin up to ungodly speeds the second you put it in gear with no way to slow it......so shut it off before you put it back in park......option B would be jack it up put it on stands block the front wheels take the rear wheels off and try it....
keep in mind neither is really safe...But......it gets the job done..you probably won't find the wine with no load anyway Good Luck Kel the carrier angle should be aim back
