Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
I'm shaking my head over the rear bumper brackets on my 72. I have both the coil spring and leaf spring swb fleet side brackets for my sport bumper and neither set match the holes properly. The outside brackets are not an issue it's the inside ones that go behind the end crossmember. When I bough the truck the bumper was hangin low and way too far back, did some research and found the previous owner had installed the coil spring equiped brackets. Bought the leaf spring swb ones and they don't match either.
Could someone with a SWB leaf spring fleetside setup please post pics of their inside brackets. I would be very thankful!! |

Re: Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
I've checked all the venders sites and they all point to these brackets but they just dont align with the holes at the fwd end going toward the axle. At this point I feel like positioning the bumper and welding the brackets, drilling a new hole is not dooable due to the rear leaf shackle hangers being in the way. Ive checked that my frame has not been modified in any way and that I have the left and right brackets in their proper location so I'm stumped... hoping to see some pictures of others.

Those are the right brackets for the swb 4x4 and swb leaf 2wd trucks. Do you have any pics with brackets in place?

Its hard to tell from that picture,I will try to get a picture tomorrow for you of the bracket setup on my swb 4x4 for you to go off of. It looks from the pic. that you have it too far back, maybe trying to use the wrong holes on bracket. They should fit pretty tight to the frame.

Re: Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
Dakman here are some pictures of the brackets on my short 4x4, sorry they are not better, batteries were crapping out as I took them, I also apologize for the underside being so dirty, the truck is not finished and needs to be detailed...

Re: Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
yep that proves it, frames are different in 72 on leaf trucks compared to the 67-71's .... I did a lot of google research last night and your 71 shackles are further fwd and the factory hole arrangements are slightly different. I'll post a pic of the same place on mine tomorrow. I also noticed on the 72 frames they didn't install the next crossmember up (crooked one) just before the axle. Seems they ommitted it on the leaf spring trucks. Found a bunch of 72 leaf frame pics both short and LWB without it. Maybe its because of the added heavy crossmember at the FWD shackle piont that the coil trucks don't have.
Here's another members 72 truck for comparison to yours.. hard to see but the 2 rear factory rivets for the spring hangers are on the rear side of the last crossmember like mine, but all 4 of your spring hanger rivets are on the forward side... both 71 and 72 rear crossmembers are in the exact same location meaning the shackles are further to the rear on 72 frames. Pic also shows the missing crossmember before the axle like mine with a brale flex line attach bracket hanging on the passenger side instead. Last edited by dakman; 03-22-2010 at 09:01 PM. |

Re: Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
speaking only of 72... I've noted the factory rivet location holes for the spring hanger brackets and the long vertical bumps in the frame on either side of the spring hangers and lack of both on a coil spring frame that the two frame rails were purpose built for either leaf spring or coil setup.
What I really suspect about the difference between the 67-71 leaf and some of the 72 leaf frames, is the possability that some 72's might have been factory cut LWB frames to satisfy the end of model production line demand for SWB trucks. A bit of a conspiracy theory but it might explain the difference in the shackle location and bumper brackets that don't fit? The new 67-72 SWB leaf equipped bumper brackets I bought would bolt right onto 71super's truck perfectly. Last edited by dakman; 03-22-2010 at 09:43 PM. |

Re: Pls Help. Callin SWB leaf w/sport bumper owners
All is well with the idea but my 4x4 is a 72 so unless your truck has been cut down, know this one has not so.... without seeing what you have it would be impossible to tell, the brackets shown are the only ones I know of ever being offered for swb 4x4 and swb leaf spring 2wd trucks.
