dumping dump bed

I am buying a dump bed...the fella that I'm buying it from says that he doesn't know how to dump the bed, so he doesn't know if it dumps or not...I'm assuming that the previous owner of the truck that the dump bed is on told the fella that it was a dump bed...my question is this...

how can he determine whether the bed is a dump bed or a stationary utility bed? he says there's no hydraulics, so that's out...thanks for the help in advance...

Chuck some of the county trucks here have a dumping bed that works on a type of handle that cranks the bed up. Maybe someone took the handle off and he doesnt know where to hook it up

I was thinking something like that, but the question is where would he look to see if the handle was missing...lol

usually they are behind the cab on the drivers side

I'll have to direct him to this thread...maybe someone can get a picture of this area of the truck so he can see if it looks the same as what he has...or maybe he has the handle and doesn't know where it goes like you said...I really don't know...thanks Adam

Look at the back part of the bed if it dumps there will be some sort of hinge there, then look to the front and make sure it's not anchored in the front.

I see a hinge in the back and that a pretty heavy bed to raise w/o hydraulics. How is the fuel filler attached I see it on the side but can't tell if its attached to the bed. It would have to be attached to the frame if it dumps.

also, could the areas circled in yellow be the crank for the dump bed...I've never owned or operated a dump bed, so if I'm way off base don't laugh...lol

the yellow circle looks like the crank I was talking about, hard to make out whats circled in red though

The yellow circle is the release handle for the tailgate lock (arrow) the red circle is the hinge.

I don't know about the fuel filler...these are the pictures that the seller sent me...

also, where exactly is the hinge...I have told him about this thread so he'll be looking at everyone's suggestions...

thanks for the info...could that bed be made to tilt easily if I could find a hydraulic unit to put in there...also, are there other ways besides a separate hydraulic system...could I possibly use a SM465 with a PTO output?

Yeah it could easily be made to dump, you'll need a hoist (scissor lift) and a dc power unit will be the cheapest route. If you went with a SM465 with a PTO output you'll then need a PTO, driveline, pump, reservoir, valve and control cable whereas the 12 volt power unit is self contained and can be wired remotely

I'll have to make sure the seller sees this so he can figure out whether it dumps or not...the bed is about 17 hours away from me I think...so I can't see it besides in pictures

Often times the remote will be behind the seat on the drivers side, something like this:

Here are a couple of power units the cheaper one is a single acting high/low system (power up gravity down) the more expensive one is double acting (power up power down). I saw a brand new monarch power unit sell at propertyroom.com for $120 but thats hit and miss.

In the photo RuralRoute C-30 posted you can see the fuel filler is attached to the chassis, in your pic it looks like the filler mounting plate may be attached to the body IMO thats the best clue, get a better photo of that area. These bodies can be monted either way dump or static with the hinge as the rear attachment point regardless.

there should be some kind of a metal tag stamped by the manufacturer on the driver side rear or the cab side with the manufacturer on it

You could pull it up with prolly a come along and a tow chain or even a chain hoist

That is definitely a dump bed. The fact there are no hydraulics "at this time" makes it no less.

Here is a pic of the pto controls, in the cab, in my C-30.


Notice there are 2 levers. The one on the right engages the pto. (place truck in neutral,engage clutch and "shift" lever forward to lock in the pto) The one on the left engages the bed's hydraulics to raise and lower the bed.(disengage clutch and pull lever back to raise bed, push lever forward and gravity lowers the bed) One word of caution if it is a pto driven dump, do not ever forget to disengage/pull back the pto lever before engaging the transmission. To do so would be "bad".

The gas tank fill tube is probably supported at the frame. Can be a pain to fill depending on how it is angled. Mine is not too bad.

My hydraulic tank is mounted on the passenger side of the truck opposite of the fuel tank.


What may have happened is this truck "was" a dump bed but someone, for some reason or another, fixed/attached the bed to the frame and possibly removed the hydraulics underneath.

If this is the case, add some real money if it needs a hydraulic pump, tank, cylinder, mounting brackets etc. Or it may have been an electric actuated dump. Not as strong as a pto but dumps. Control could be a button somewhere. Hydraulics would still be required.

Other location for controls to dump are usually around the floor of the driver, even seen them tucked close to under the seat.

Either way, there were controls in the cab to dump that bed unless they had a remote cabled hook-up which I doubt.

Just inspect under the bed for a lift cylinder. It is either there or not. I too doubt it was a manual screw jack. That is a commercial 'material hauling' dump bed. Municipalities use a lot of them. Good beds, but always hydraulic that I have seen.


I about guarantee that evidence is somewhere in that cab where the controls are or were.

Yet if not, price the hydraulics you'll need to purchase before buying it as a 'dump bed'. Essentially without that what you have is a flat bed with sides and a very heavy tail gate!

Didn't see the previous posts on electric dumps, good advice there too. An electric hook-up may be the way to go depending the type of transmission you have.
