Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
First off I'm wondering which hubcaps (if any?) would have come stock on my grandpa's 50th C20 Camper Special.
I'd like to try to find a full set to put back on it someday. There is no option for them on the SPID, (full list here http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=385565) and on the build sheet it shows "CH-" under hub caps. Also what color would the stock wheels have been? White or gray? Secondly, the SPID shows it originally came with the M20 4 spd, well it has a THM400 in it now, but I got to thinking the other day and realized that it has a gold painted auto trans steering column and no traces of a clutch pedal. I haven't looked for a hole in the tunnel yet, but it's done got me stumped. Any ideas/answers? Thanks

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
your custom camper (camper special was a ford name in 67 - 72) would have had white hubcaps with the black receced areas, and a blue bow tie.
The clutch pedal comes off easily, and a gold column wouldn't be too hard to find back in the day. There is a chance that it came mis-equipped, but probably was converted later. |

The RPO list I pulled out of a '46-'72 Chevy parts catalog calls RPO Z81 "Camper Special", probably where I picked it up at, along with my old Ford that actually is a "Camper Special" I believe, but it's a '78. What color would the wheels have been?

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
Your 50th 3/4 ton would have had "bright" (polished stainless) or silver painted caps as shown in the following picture. These are held on by wheel clips. No "over the nubs" caps like used on later 3/4 ton models. Check your glove box door and it should tell what wheels and caps came with your truck.
White/orange caps were in '67 but I have never seen a white '68...only silver/black/red and polished stainless on the 3/4 ton trucks. Andy...you beat me to it...LOL!

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
I screwed up on the hub cap description. I was thinking 69 - 72.
I just saw another thread that had the correct info... and i nabbed the photo he posted; |

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
CH on the build sheet was probably "Chrome"...they called them chrome on the spid as well but they were really polished stainless...much better. The option number on build sheet was P03.
Wheels were Argent Silver.

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
CH = Chrome, makes sense, build sheet doesn't mention anything about hub caps though.

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
Actually they were chrome (chromed over brass). That is why 67 thru early 72 caps dent so easily. Around middle of 72 and later, GM started making them out of much stronger, but less shiny stainless.

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
Here is the spid on my 50th showing chromed hub caps installed at the factory.
Too bad she doesn't have them any more, kind of strange because she is mostly original. |

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
This is the factory wheel look for your '68 3/4 ton custom camper. The vast majority had 7.50-16 tires on 2 piece silver rims. Some were ordered with various optional sizes, including the wider 16.5" 1 piece rims. Remember, all these pre 1969 rims have clips for the caps. Correct cap is shown. Newer wheels with bumps will not accept correct 68 3/4 ton caps.

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
So then the correct wheels are gonna be harder to come by? That's nice

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
Looking at the pic, is it even the right color to be a 50th? It looks kinda like the lighter gold from that year... not saying it isn't, just wondering.

Re: Hub cap and trans question on a 50th
It was a dreary day and that is the original paint that spent several sunny winters in Arizona. It's got the right RPO codes, it is a 50th.
