My truck only starts with starting fluid
Recently, after a bit of driving, my truck wont start and will only turn over. After a 1 hour of sitting, it starts. I look down in the carb and the its getting fuel. I took the carb apart (qjet) and everything was clean. I also replaced the fuel pump and filter just to be sure. I still does the same thing. I can take a can of starting fluid and spray about 3 sprays in each barrel and it will start up. What could this be?

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
do you have a see through fuel filter? See if the gas is staying in there, if not it's draining back to the tank which could be a damaged fuel hose or line letting air into the system which allows the fuel to drain back to the tank.

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
This may be a dumb suggestion, but have you tried removing the gas cap when it won't start?

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
I have a see through filter and it is full of gas. I can work the throttle and see and hear gas squirting in the venturis. I did also removed the gas cap. A mechanic buddy of mine suggested that the coil might be going out and that it has a weak spark, that is why it will only crank with the starting fluid.

do you have an HEI if you do?? it could be the module...the extra heat while sitting still maybe causeing it to act up if its that then its ony a matter of time before it goes completely

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
When I work the throttle with my hand, I can see down the carb and see full squirts of fuel shooting in. The see through filter is full and I just put on a new fuel pump. Fuel is atleast getting to the throttle blades. Also, when it is acting up, the motor turns over as if the hot wire is disconnected and not like when it is struggling to start. Im starting to suspect the ignition.

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
trash in carb or water in fuel? Can you keep misting in starting fluid in and keep it running with starter fluid?

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
Once I have it running, it runs perfectly and the starting fluid will only bog it down. Im going to have the module checked. The timing is set a 12 degrees and hasnt moved.

Re: My truck only starts with starting fluid
They way you describe it is a classic example of carb flooding. Qjets were notorious for leaking fluid from the internal plugs. (see pic)
The reason it starts with starter fluid is because of it's combustibility. from this site: http://www.carcraft.com/howto/57178/photo_12.html |
