Set myself on fire today
Heavy Duty Grinding + Frayed Jeans = Disco Inferno
Just trying to shorten my frame and the knees of my jeans were pretty frayed, I was just thinking that I sure was making a lot of sparks and I might want to watch out. lol, I probably have not moved that fast in a long time. Nothing a few panic smacks did not take care of but it sure exciting there for a few moments.  Oh well, got the frame cut and put back together so I guess everything turned out fine. |

That is exactly why I go shirtless and wear Richard Simmons shorts when I weld. I would hate for my clothes to catch on fire while I'm in them.

I was TIG welding steel one day while wearing cotton gloves. My hand holding the filler rod got too close to the arc and the finger tip caught fire, no big deal happens all the time. So I put my hand under my helmet to blow out the flames but I was still holding the filler rod, which went about 3" up my left nostril before cooling its red hot tip in my mucus membrane. I heard the sizzle then screamed like a little girl and ran around the shop.
The worst part was I never put the fire on my glove out to while the searing pain in my nose distracted me I burned my fingers too! |

This thread is making me laugh so hard Im crying! Only because I can relate.
By far the worst was when I was using a cut off wheel on my grinder to trim some brackets, when it kicked back and literally got caught up in my jeans... in the crotch area. 2 of my friends wereover, and it got real quiet...till one of my friends broke the silence with "are you ok? you didnt cut it off did you?" All I could say was I dont know. haha It ripped the front out of my jeans, and took out a little of my boxers too, but no bodily harm. After I checked myself out, I realised I had broke my last cutting wheel.... so I went to tractor supply for some more, ripped jeans and all. You should have seen the looks on a few peoples faces But hey, i had work to finish up!

I was standing by my brother-in-law when he was using a cutting torch when I realize his shirt was on fire. When I told him he threw the torch and ripped his shirt off and stomped on it, I was laughing so hard I almost peed myself.
On another occasion I was cutting off rusted bolts in the bed of my truck with the same torch. When I finished up I started picking up the bolt heads that were laying on the ground, but I forgot that some had just been cut. You could hear the sizzle and see the thread lines in my thumb for weeks. That time my cousin was helping me, and he was the one laughing, I guess what goes around comes around!

i thankfully haven't done anything...yet... but since i'm sure u guys like a good laugh, my cousins brother was trying to start a willys p/u and couldn't get it to start so used a lighter to look into the carb...willys was nearly ruined and he lost both eyebrows and burnt his hand, and the best part was he said "i dont understand why it caught fire" to the paramedics lol

it happens to all of us. you cant build anything without a little pain and blood.
a friend and i were working on my 67 a while back and i was useing an air grinder. the grinder wheel blew apart and hit me in the ribs and stuck in my friends shoulder. there we were both rolling around on the garage floor in pain. i ended up with a broken rib and ten stitches and my friend got six. thats the day we say that we became blood brothers.

Can't believe I'm sharing this. Welded on a motorcycle gas tank once in order to pull the dents out. Forgot it had sat for several months with all the holes taped off. Assumed it was really cleaned out. Hit it with the welder, Poped a hole in the thing, and ...BANG! It dissapeared. I was looking around on the floor for it, My eyes were blurry and my hearing was gone...Then...CRASH!!! It landed on the concrete floor right next to me and I peed. I was in a large barn so it had "hang time" before it rearanged itself...and I began looking for a hole to crawl in. Lucky I alive. Never again. wiser...I think.

Been a couple years since I've set myself on fire...
 I managed to set my engine builder's hair on fire one time, too. We had just put a new carb on the car and I was trying to get it to run; it caught and backfired just as he was leaning in for a better look. Managed to get part of his beard, one eyebrow, and singed his "bangs". He responded by buying this for himself:
