85 GMC project of mine.
My uncle gave me a 85 GMC HighSeirra 1/2 ton 4x4 a couple months ago. He baught it new off the showroom floor and parked it in his driveway one day in 1995 where it sat for 15 years.
I trailer the truck to my buddy's shop, drank some beers and put a new battery in it, primed the carb and the truck started, ran, idled and responded to throttle on 15 year old gasoline. none of us beleived it. Has anyone else experienced this? |

Re: 85 GMC project of mine.
I experience weirder stuff than that after enough beers. Elvis is NOT dead.
I did see a military deuce and a half run on a bottle of everclear, a can of budweiser, a gallon of used cooking oil and then the guy pee'd in the tank. It ran fine too... They were just proving that some of those old trucks would in fact run on "anything" the G.I.'s could find in the field. |

Re: 85 GMC project of mine.
I would say it was ran at some point past the date it was parked. Gas isn't stable enough to remain volatile after 15 years and perform the way you explained it.
I do believe with some "fresh" gas a truck that basically sat for 15 years started and ran as good as you say it did, just not on stale 15 year old gas.

i can believe it.. i bought an 84 gt350 mustang with a 302 that sat for just over ten years when i got it and with a new battery and a can of carb cleaner just to get it started, it ran on that old gas... not even close to being able to drive on the road but at least it ran..

Old gas last better than today's gas. Today's gas has too much junk for emissions. Gas burns off faster today. I can believe you.

Re: 85 GMC project of mine.
Yea the story is slightly fabricated. the throttle was not that responsive, but the rest was true. After a while of running it like that the carb was so gummed it would not do anything but idle.
I asked my uncle about how long it sat, He said in 95 the power steering pump started leaking and he said "screw this truck" and never touched it again. My wife and i even found a google earth image from 12 years ago showing where i picked it up hahaa. Even stranger, when i got it the it had no clutch pedal. I ordered a new master and slave cylinder, The night before my buddy filled the resivior and it somehow magically bled itself out and now the clutch works fine. Hell of a truck |

Re: 85 GMC project of mine.
So does everyone still believe in 15 year old gas? Technically, you could drink year old milk too....
