I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
I went to napa last week to get the parts I need to completely rebuild the brakes in my truck and couldn't find a matching part for the rear brakes on my dana 60. Basically napa says that there were two brake options for the rears 11" and 13" drums, my problem is that my drums have an internal diameter of 12-1/8". Way to small to be 13" and way to big to possibly be a worn 11" drum.
As I understand it 12" drums were put on the 67-70 rears, but poking around on Rockauto's website they show a 12" drum for leaf sprung dana axles for the 2wd 72 GMCs only not the Chevs. So now I'm completely confused. It's possible that it's not the original rear, any thoughts on what I should be ordering for the rear brakes? Or how I might be able to better identify that axle? Thanks, Ron

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
There are lots of different Dana rears. D35s, D44s, D60s, D70s, 5 lug, 6 lug, 8 lug, full float, semi float. Lots of "Danas." Picture and numbers will help, as well as truck specs. Get a pic of the SPID. There should be a line for the diff. That number could help.
Basically, if it is not a 1/2 ton 12 bolt, you have to do the research and tell the parts store what you need. Unless you happen to be lucky enough to has an old Mom & Pop auto parts store handy. The box stores cater to "normal" vehicles, not so much to old trucks.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
I learned a similar lesson. Turned out that the backing plates on my Dana had "FoMoCo" stamped on them. So somebody along the way felt that Ford brakes were better than Chevy brakes. I'm working on gathering parts to convert mine back to correct Chevy parts, but it's been a tough journey since so many Dana configs are out there.
Take a look at the outside of your backing plates, look for numbers, stamps, etc. Might give you a clue as to where your brakes came from.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
By SPID do you mean the option sheet on the glove box door? If so unfortunately it's gone.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
It's a 1972 3/4 ton 4x4, and if it matters the date code stamped on the axle is 252B6.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
I'm still not sure that my axle is from the 72, it may be from an earlier model, too bad I couldn't find the BOM code on the axle shaft, that would have answered a few questions. As well, no idea how to decode the date code, 252B6 if anybody knows.
In any case the parts I mentioned above seem to be physical matches for my truck, so I'll go with those and see how it works. Ron

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
Well the raybestos #2052 drum appears to have been discontinued, so I rolled the dice and found a drum that dimensionally and appearance wise matches the drum that was on it, it'll cost me $15 (frieght) if I'm wrong but I'm satisified that it ill probably work. I'll post when it comes.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
Some good news the drums came and it looks almost exactly like the original, so if you need a new 12" drum it looks like the NAPA #440-1202 is correct.

Re: I'm confused about my trucks rear axle
I kept reading 7/16" studs on the '72 and it should be 9/16" '71-up/disc brake.
