Found My Tic... Now what to do...

Well I finally got time to pull the valve cover off my blazers motor. The source of the tic was painfully obvious.

I had a post completely broke off, the lifter was off. Luckily everything was there on top, no missing parts.

Now I am not sure as to the next step. I know the heads for the motor are from a 305. They are supposed to breath better.

I need to get the post out. Does anyone know if they are typically a threaded post or a pressed in post? Any thoughts on how to get it out? I might just take it to a shop...

Also the rubber valve cover gasket is in good shape and never leaked. Can it be reused?

Just had a thread about pulling rocker studs:

Most likely, your rocker studs are pressed in and can be pulled if there are still threads on it. If not, drilling it out I imagine is you're only option. Someone else might chime in here with a better solution.

Oh...if your rubber gasket is fairly new and in good shape you can clean it up and reuse it. If it were cork...garbage.

That linked helped. I am concerned as it appeared that the stud had already been drilled once and had a pin placed in to hold the stud.

I think I might just run it in to the shop. I have a really good head guy here and he is pretty cheap. Also would this have allowed for gas to get in my oil? I just barely did an oil change in the middle of this mess and noticed it had a gas smell. Should I do another one as soon as it is fixed? I ran on this oil change for about 1/2 a day before parking it an deciding I needed to dig in.

Also would this issue be a cause of some grey smoke and making the engine seem to run a little rich?

I welded a nut on one once...told the guy to let it cool off for several ours and he got it out fine.

the gas problem sounds like stuck float in the carb or dirty needle/seat allowing gas to flow when sitting.....

as for the stud, have your guy put in screw studs while you have it/them off being fixed... well worth your time/money IMHO....

In that other thread I linked was the first I've heard of "pinning" the new press in stud. I wouldn't know what to do in that case, but it sounds like it might turn into a P.I.T.A.

I would get this all fixed up, run some seafoam in your oil a couple of days, then change the oil. Hopefully the overall cost isn't too pricy. Let us know what you do!
