US Government owned vehicles
I was looking at a 68 parts truck I bought for the bed and discoved a metal plate that looks like a US govt inventory tag of some sort. It's aluminum (about 3" x 3") and was riveted to the drivers side kick panel. It says "Nomenclature" on it and has basic descriptions of the truck and lists a contract # (DAAE07-68-c-1247) and has a Fed Stock # listed. I googled the contract # and DAAE07 sems like a generic US Military supplies contract code. Has anyone seen this before? I figure it must have been an army truck or maybe USAF. It's a basic shortbed stepside 6 cyl manual trans.

Re: US Government owned vehicles
My best friend was in the first "gulf" war and was basically in transport and supplies. I would never want to own anything that he had been behind the wheel of. LOL
It would be like the worst of Hertz, Avis, Enterprise....etc combined!!!!! |

That's funny! My dad was in the army in Korea and said the scariest part of his time there was a jeep ride with his best friend there.

Re: US Government owned vehicles
That is a Federal DATA Plate. All military owned equipment has one.

Re: US Government owned vehicles
that would be awsome for an original build. that plate will even give you the bumper number that the Military used for it.

Re: US Government owned vehicles
The tag has a registration number on it. is that the bumper # you are talking about?
The original build would be great if the truck was not complete swiss cheese. The cab actually has holes in the backside below the rear window. I guess the seam along the rear roofline opened up and water got in between the inner and outer layers of sheetmetal in the cab. That brings up another question, do you think this bumper is something other than someone's homemade job. Could it be an army bumper? I wasn't sure about keeping it and thought it would just be like a boat anchor on the back nof the truck.

Can't wait to finish it by spring fired up the BBC 502 Memorial Day weekend sounded bad ass specially with open headers!

Re: US Government owned vehicles
there is no particular place that the data plate would have been. it is just where the person putting it on thought that it would be the easyest

Anyone recognize the bumper as an Army item?

Re: US Government owned vehicles
yes the registration number on the tag would have been the bumper number/tag number. that number would have been stenciled on the bumper (front and rear), or on the doors, or on a license plate. that is the number that they would have used to track the vehicle while it was owned by the govt.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But since it weighs a s***load, it adds to the scrap value when I get rid of it!

Re: US Government owned vehicles
Doesnt look like an Army bumper, but if civilians used it while in service who knows.....
No matter what it was a GSA vehicle, doesnt matter who owned it. It belonged to DOD at one time. Smitty

Re: US Government owned vehicles
With a data plate it would have been dod owned not GSA. GSA is not a Congressionaly funded agency so they dont put data plates on them. They are streight up civilian vehicles with no mil specs. DOD does leases some of its vehicles from GSA.

Man, that crazy green show truck needs one of those! The one with the blower, distressed leather, etc. looks like a WWII plane...

Who knows with the bumper. Remember we veterans always say " There are 2 ways of doing things, the right way and the Army way."

Re: US Government owned vehicles
It don't have a "Nomenclature Tag" (or I haven't found it), but the SPID & build sheet on my Chevy list "9910AD GSA Inspection Label."
And the build sheet shows "Charged to 'General Service Administration'" The build sheet also lists "9907AB Address Tag.", whatever that is.

Re: US Government owned vehicles
I don't think anyone in the military put that bumper on the truck. If they did it would probably have a pintle receiver on it and not a receiver for a ball. I haven't seen a trailer in the military yet that uses a hitch ball.

This is the one on a '67 short stepper I have. It's the only thing on the whole truck that is in decent shape!
