cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

Well I am trying to get all the bases covered on this swap so I can start. I want the truck to look stock and be able to stop/tow/drive great... I plan on boxing the frame all the way back and weld in x braces I am going to try to get a whole 2wd dodge pickup with a 12 valve or 24 valve in it, so I can use the rearend I dont know if I should 4 link or leaf? Leafs would be easyer I think. I will use the dodge fuel tank mounted under the bed. The suspension is going to be tricky to do for cheap, can I use 3/4 ton chevy arms and spindles along with the steering? will the a-arms bolt up to the 65 chevy c10?.I might try to use the dodge bakes I will need to look at what I get. I plan on using this as a daily driver and tow rig and depending how it goes, the strip. I think this will be a nice driver. I think I can get a motor, trans, rearend, for about $1500 I have done a few swaps before. What else do you think should be done to make this safe? I am looking for idea's and am not rich, and in no hurry. I am just looking for the swap truck, so in the down time looking for info.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

OK, I'm a little slow here. Is the Dodge rear end 8 lug, and is that why you want 3/4 ton brakes on the front? Do you need/want to use the Dodge rear because of the gearing? If yes, it might be easier to go with a later GM rear. What ratio do you need?

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

I just want the bigger newer brake setup, that's why I was going to use the dodge rearend. When I get the whole doner truck I will check. I think 4.11s would be good. And the dodge is 8 lug also.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

Honestly in a situation like that, I would think you are better off getting the whole dodge (frame, motor, rear end etc all as one) and grafting the chevy body on to it.

Keep the engine, brakes, drivetrain etc, but channel the body onto that frame. You would probably have to shorten the frame, and do custom mounts; but i still think it would be less of a hassle then converting the other way around.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

I would suggest upgrading the running gear on the '65 frame to the '73-'87 C20 or C30 components. Then drop your Cummins and trans into the '65 frame and build motor and trans mounts. IMO it is easier to accomplish this, this way as opposed to body mods and mounts. BTDT

Also if you were to swap frames, that might create issues as far as title and licensing in your city, county, state. Something to consider.

Yeah that sound about right. I understand that the body swap is an option and I might have to do that, I hope I can get it one way or another.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

Is your C-10 a longbed? IMO shortbeds are not real safe for towing heavy trailers. And, I'm assuming you're lookin' to tow some weight with the Cummins.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

Yes the '73-'87 (thru '91 on the Suburbans and CC's) control arms will bolt up to your '65 front crossmember. You will want to upgrade to the larger LCA shaft u-bolts used on the '73 and up.

Very nice looking truck there......

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

looks like a cummins 4bt to me. Not nearly as powerful as the 5.9 cummins you see in the dodge trucks, but def. enough grunt to get it around.

Re: cummins diesel into a 65 chevy

x2, ive seen some of the stuff on that site.....rediculous. that little motor is a cool alternative to replace an older drivetrain. Like I said, its not exactly a hot rod but will get out of its own way if a few $$ are into it.
