Need Some Help And Have ??'s On My Flame Throwers!!!!!
Hey out there,
I need some help about flame throwers on my 1966 chevy truck. I want to use the old school way with the manual choke, but what type of coils do i use to get a consistent spark? Basically where i can flip a switch and get continuance spark without having to flip the switch back and forth like crazy. I got some 12 volt coils now and the spark is really weak and to get a decent spark i have to flip the switch back and forth like crazy. Do i use a higher end coil like msd or flame thrower or someone told me model t ford coils?? The other thing is what gauge wire is good idea to use to run to the coils to the switch to the battery?? And am i wiring it right?? Cause right now i am using 16 gauge wire with two separate wires to each coil to the toggle switch and got one wire to a fuse to the battery. Any help would be great i also live in illinois and if there is anyone in the chicagoland area that i could call or talk to about this that would really help me out. Because i really want to have them on my truck this summer. Thanks a lot for anyone's help |

It sounds like you're just using coils, plugs, wires and a switch? If that is correct, you're having problems because you're missing some components, such as the Autoloc (or other company) module. I have one on my 64 and just hold the button to bark fire like crazy.

Re: Need Some Help And Have ??'s On My Flame Throwers!!!!!
Thanks muddpile, how big does your flames get cause where i live some guys that i know have a manual choke system model t ford coils, wires, plugs and a switch and they get flames about 5 or 6 feet out the back?? Cause i know some of those systems mess with your distributor, and the result is crappy little flames. I am looking for about 4 or 5 foot flames more would be great but then i know if you want to do that you got to get into the injected systems. Don't want to go that route

Try http://tnga.org/ click 'tech' then 'electronic flamethrowers'
It walks you through building the electronics similar to the Autoloc setup but for WAY cheaper using parts from Radio Shack. The circuit acts like points and allows the coils to charge. |

Re: Need Some Help And Have ??'s On My Flame Throwers!!!!!
My flames with the manual choke and just regular oil-filled canister coils will shoot 6 foot long blue jet-stream style flames. If the choke is yanked the flames drop back to about a foot and a half, change to orange and rise up over the top of the tailgate. I have short pipes and a big block, so results may vary, the carb was a 600 Edelbrock at that time.

Another way to do it "old school" get a HEI dizzy and hook a 12 volt motor to it (wiper motor),,,run your wires off the dizzy to plugs in your pipes,,,also I've seen a few guys add propane to the mix
