Will I need to return this camshaft??
Today was going great, my new camshaft arrived and I opened it to find the bearing journals had a light rust on them. It's not terrible, but it's enough to concern me. I don't believe it's just surface rust, when I drug my fingernail across and there may be slight indentions. What should I do? Send it back? Is this going to damage the bearings or should it be fine? Here's a pic of one of the journals.

Re: Will I need to return this camshaft??
Was this new from a vendor (like Summit or someone like that)? I would definitely send it back as you want those journals to be perfect or it's likely you could wipe out the cam, lifters or whole engine.
If it was previously owned by someone, even being new, you might be stuck with it but I would not run it. My .02 worth.

Call them, they should be able to work it out, unless it was the last one they had on a closeout.

Re: Will I need to return this camshaft??
Alright, took keenan's advice and used steel wool, it cleaned up pretty nice, there's no longer any catching when I drag my finger nail over it, it was probably just rust on top catching it. All thats left is like a blemish in the steel where the rust spots were. You guys think it's ok to use?

Its one of those things if it does wear out your bearing then you have to start all over and youll be kicking yourself for it later on. I would personally send it back, better safe then sorry right.

X2, If I paid for a new cam and it looked like that I'd send it right back.

Re: Will I need to return this camshaft??
Called rockauto after I found a small chip in the very back journal. That did it for me, there sending me a brand new one plastic wrapped and well oiled so it doesn't rust like I requested. Should get it Monday.

Re: Will I need to return this camshaft??
There is NO WAY I would use that in an engine. You are just asking for a bearing to get ate. And like someone said....you will have to tear the engine down pretty far to replace it.

Re: Will I need to return this camshaft??
It looks like it has been sitting on the shelf for a long time or had been pulled out of the box and had the protective coating wiped off it and put back in the box. The chip in the lobe is the clincher though.
