Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

Hello all............

I am a square body man (currently have an 77' K5 Blazer 2wd and a 82' SWB) but, I love these old 60's trucks. Dad and I have been looking for a project and found this little beauty for $ 695. Might have to send one of the uncles to check it out. No title though............

Surpising the body is not all that rusty except for the norm (can corner, outside floor pan). I am not worried that it has no title, this is a project.......................

63 is probably the most desirable of the 60-66's. Nice choice.
Only problem for me would be the "no title" thing. Whenever I hear that, I walk away.

My father feels the same way on this issue. The truck is more for him than me (at least this is what I would tell the wife). I went through this already on my 77' K5 2wd. I new it was too good to be true!!!!!!!! Still might have to pick it up though and save it for a future build or cab swap..............................

It would be a shame to lose whatever work and investment you put in it years down the road if it turned out like the story below:

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

probably not the reaction you were hoping for - but I've had some bad title nightmares also, and I agree with those that would walk away. In fact, I'd run away screaming.

However, depending on your state - if you're really interested in the truck and there's not a line of folks waiting to buy it, you could do a title search with DMV and maybe get it ironed out before you purchase. You risk someone buying it without the title in the meantime, but at least then it's not your problem.

Problem is that if you buy it w/o title, whenever you do get around to it to build it - when you're done, you'll want to drive it, then you may find yourself up the proverbial $695 creek with no paddle.

Best way to avoid a situation like that is to have CHP inspect the vin number and makes sure the one you think you have is correct. Then go down to DMV and get the form that is basically a request for information on a vehicle (I can't remember or find the official document name). I think there is a $10 or $20 fee to file the paperwork, but it will tell you who the last registered owner is. Then you just get in touch with that last owner and have them fill out a "bill of sale" and "statement of facts" for the lost title (I have found a 12 pack of soda or beer depending on taste can help this part of the process a lot). Vehicle codes varies a bit state to state, but the DMV is fairly consistant. That is how I've had to do it on my own vehicles here in California.

Oh, and if you send a letter to the last know address for the last registered owner and it gets returned by the post office for "not at address" DMV will accept that as an attempt, and allow you to apply for a new title.

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

Thanks guys. The k5 I bought was out of Maryland. I tried to get that MF titled for several months before I just decided to use it for parts. The 63' I found in my dad's hometown of Monroe, Louisiana. I think we may pass on this one not unless dad wants to pick it up purely for parts. I guess we will have to keep looking for one.......

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

I agree.

If the seller knows who the last titled owner is, and you can get a hold of them they can file for a lost title, and at the same time transfer it over to you. I have done that before.

It would be hard for me to pass up a short bed '63. If nothing else to would be good for parts

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

Not only are states different, but so are counties within the state. I can go down to my local courthouse clerk with a bill of sale of a 25+ year old vehicle and they will run the VIN #. If it comes up clean- they will issue me a title for the vehicle.

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

I stopped by and saw my old man today and we are going to push forward and see about getting the truck. I am going to have my uncle make some inquiries @ the La. DMV and see what we can do about getting a title or at least the contact info of the last registered owner. Going to try and get the VIN run and see if everything is on the up and up as well. Thanks for all of the support and recommendations guys. I hope to be coming back and getting your input on the project if everything goes well. Too good of a deal to pass up.......................

nice find and BTW titles are only issued in alabama for 1975 and newer vehicles all you need is a bill of sale and an officer to verify the vin tag

Re: Might be coming over from the 73'-87" side

I just got back from my folks' place and my old man talked to the guy selling the shortie on the phone. Apparently he is an old car builder from California who has relocated to north east Louisiana. Turns out he lives about 7 miles from my Dad's house down there and he does know the last registered owner of the truck (he bought it for parts for his other 63').

If we can strike a deal with him, does anyone know how much it would cost to have the truck shipped back up to Northern Virginia from Louisiana? It's about 1100 miles and some change................................
