Score at pick n pull, now need help.

I have been looking for one of these for a really long time! Needless to say I am stoked to find one. I got it out of a 82 Blazer. I wish it was in better shape but at least I have the essentials. I plan on using parts off of my current cluster to replace the lens, and probably the housing. The printed circuit board has one spot on one of the blinker bulb connections that has come apart. I am goning to try and use epoxy and some super glue to fix that. Copper is still good, just the laminated part has come apart. I have a 86 Sierra Classic. If I am not mistaken, this should be a plug and play. Let me know if I am wrong. I got this thing with the tach harness(wire) for 50 bones! I have seen them going on ebay recently for upwards of 250-275, although they were in better shape. What do you guys think?

*UPDATE* I hope this will fix some of the problems that were discussed on here. Thanks c10sport! See my last post for the pic.

Fantastic find!

I'm nearly certain it will plug and play in your '86.

wires going into the plug will more like be in the wrong position to match up to the printed circuit board on the back of the cluster

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

It will be a plug and play, just need to wire the tach. I did a couple tach dash swaps, no issues.

Oh and I wish they were selling for that much, I just picked up one like that from an 83 C60, only diff is no unleaded fuel only on the gas gauge, got that for $20. Makes 3 of these now. Actually free, didn't pay for it yet...

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

I don't think it's plug-and-play if your 86 has the VSS box (most all 86s did). Also you cannot swap housings if by "housing" you mean the lime green plastic part that everything goes into. The tach housing is different from the regular housing. Lots of good info at the link I posted below.

By the way I just swapped an 80 tach into my 78, it was plug-and-play functionally but the gauges look a little different.

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

It will be impossible to make work with your 86, no matter what. I offer you double your $$ to solve your dilemma.

You will have to use the housing you got with the tach, probably have to swap your speedo over, maybe mod the housing a hair to get your VSS to plug in, maybe rewire your main connection in to the cluster. All fairly simple stuff and tons of information here and on 73-87. Is easy to repin the connector on your harness.

I wasn't aware that the 86 had vss at all, good information, I thought that started in 87.
I am dealing with retro fitting an electronic speedo on an 86 it has been a learning experience for sure.

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

Great score!!!! The 80's version are harder to find, because they made less of them. If you pull your cluster out and it has the vss attached to the speedo; just swap speedo's! I would swap all the guages over anyway; water, oil, speed. Clean it up, hook it up and try it out

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

Thanks guys for all the response! Some info on here I really hadn't thought about. It sounds like a little more than plug-n-play, but I think I will be able to make the small changes to make it work out.

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

Just realized part of the housing was broke. I have never had any experience with these so I have a question about the part that is broke. I circled the part in question. It appears that what is missing is needed for the shift indicator to work properly, am I right or wrong?

Re: Score at pick n pull, now need help.

Your left side tab is broken too.

it's worthless and you should send it to me for proper disposal.

Kidding aside, with some careful cutting of the plastic from another cluster and some epoxy or glue may save it. And yes, it's the guide for the shift indicator cable.

Couldn't you put all the guts and printed circuit from this cluster in another one that isn't broken?

The gauge cluster holder is unique as well, since the gas gauge is moved and the hole for the tach is different, etc. Might be able to mod one that had a clock in it and make it work, who knows.
