1967 ram assist steering
ok guys I got a question for you.
I just picked up a power steering set up from a 67 with a 250. I have I think, everything to install this in my other 67. Sooo how rare is this thing? Ive seen them on a 65 but the frame mounting brackets and the distribution block looked different

Re: 1967 ram assist steering
My 68 has Ram assist steering. If it leaks, you can find a rebuild kit for the control valve and the ram, but look it up for a corvette 80's or so. They are easy to rebuild. So people say to ditch it, but Other people have never seen one before. So i say keep it.

Re: 1967 ram assist steering
You can buy the steering valves & the other parts on Ebay, like the other guy said from 80s Vettes & Impalas. I have it on my 67 C10 w/a 283 & 3 on the tree.

Re: 1967 ram assist steering
Some people don't like ram assist steering. My '77 GMC-6500 dump truck has ram assist steering and it works good.

Re: 1967 ram assist steering
This was the only PS system offered until the trucks changed to the integral box around 69-ish. Chevy used the same system on passenger cars until 64 and sold millions of them, so the design is well-proven. It is rare on the trucks only because not many truck buyers ordered PS in those years.
Downside? You have two more hoses to worry about with correspondingly more connections that are potential leak points. On the other hand, the control valve is out in the open and easier to service if it ever needs work. Also, it is a total bolt-on for the earlier trucks that don't have the frame dimple for the integral box and you don't need to modify the intermediate shaft to install it. Ray |
