Big block stroker questions
For all those out there that have built a big block. I've got a MArk V 454 block that I wanna build into a stroker 496. A couple questions I have. First, how much clearancing of the block am I gonna have to do? Is this something I could do myself? the machine shop wants $200 to do this. What tools would I need and how would I go about doing it? I've got plenty of automotive tools, die grinder, dremel, etc. So I can get ahold of what ever tools I need. Second question: I found a kit from StrokerMotor.com that includes a 5140 steel crank, KB Hyperuetectic pistons, 4340 steel I-beam rods, all of this custom balenced. Will this kit handle 600 horse and 600 Lb-ft of torque? Or should I step up to forged pistons and different rods. I can get the above kit for $1500 with balencer and flexplate.
Thanks in advance.

well to answer youre questions. the amount of clearancing necessary will depend on youre rod choice and what capscrews or rod bolts are used, having been on both sides of it meaning doing it myself and paying to have it done .....200.00 bucks is a good price for some one else having the aggrivation..hopefully they are going to use a mill and make them nice and clean... as for horsepower and tourqe levels for the 5140 crank and hyper pistons , they are more than adequate for those power levels ........if you got any more questions drop me a pm and i'll be glad to help

Just pick up the phone and call Dick over at strokermotor.com
He's always been more than helpful with me and did a great job on my 383. I'm sure he would tell you where and how much clearancing needs to be done. Their number is 214-350-4979. SC

Well! First lets see what you have. A Mark V is a large car made by one of the big three in the seventies, I doubt we are talking about that. lol. If you have a Mark IV you have clearance problems. If you have a Gen V you are in luck. To get 496ci you over-bore a stock 454 by .060" and stroke it 1/4". If you have the Gen V, it should accept said crank if you are using steel rods. You stated the kit has steel rods, so it should fit, Horay!!! Good luck!

Keenee, thank's for the wonderful and hopefull information. I do have the Generation V big block, which actually has Mark V stamped on the pushrod guide plates. unfortunately, I have to put about $800 into machine work on the heads and block. The block has to be line bored as the crank had snapped. Possibly due to an off-balenced harmonic balencer. So make that a lesson to ya. But thanks again all of you. Sounds like I'm building a stroker. Muskrats, eat your heart out.
