RearEnd Upgrade?
Hi, Im new to 67-72 C10 world and have recently purchased a 1967 C10, 2wd Short Cab. Me and my Dad have slowly been fixing it up and we've ran into a bit of a problem in the rearend department. When we bought the truck we were told it had a 12 bolt out of a chevelle "not sure what year", but were not sure if it is. Ive found a few numbers off of the pumpkin and axles etc, but ive been unable to determine excatly what it came out of. The numbers are as followed. On the driver's side front side of the pumpkin, Gm 53. On the passenger's side front side of the pumpkin, NF3896838. On the axle housing itself, 12345 67890. Could someone please tell me what this rearend is out of or direct me to where i can find out please...

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
Hello and welcome to the site.I can't help with the numbers, but are you sure it's not just the original truck rear?If it came from a car it would have been modified to mount. Can you see that it was altered? What is the issue with the rear?

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
Yeah im sure it's not factory, as the 67 C10 didn't have a 12 bolt option. And the issue is im going to rebuild it and need to know if its a car 12 bolt or one out of a later model c10. Im purchasing a new eaton limited slip and just wanted to know for sure what the rearend was before i started buying upgrades. ty

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
Did a google search on NF3896838 and all the results are 67-72 trucks, so it looks like you've got a truck axle!

Thanks for the replies, however ive found the casting number NF3896838 also associated with novas, camaros, as well as chevelles.. In the end i suppose a custom rear end guy wouldnt have a problem making what i get work i was just curious if anyone new exactly what it came out of.. again ty for the replies

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
On the top of the passenger side axle housing there should be series of numbers/letters that should help you decode it. This site has some good information:

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
easy way to tell if car or truck 12bolt is by the bolt pattern// a car like nova camero or chevell will b 5X4.75 trucks had 5X5 or 6lug rears

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
sorry my factory 12 bolt is at board member bobbos house. Like stated above if it's six lug it's definitely a truck rear probably the fatory rear end.

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
Ok so i checkd the bolt spacing and it was 5x4.75, so if what Hart Rod is sayin is true its a 12bolt from a car.. Also i found the numbers on top of the passenger side axle housing and they are as follows. 2N1190ADT, but after a google search etc. i found no info on these.. Again ty guys for the replies, i think im gettin close to solving the rearend mystery..

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
A car 12 bolt will have a perfectly round cover, while a truck 12 bolt cover is irregular-shaped. Also, a Chevelle rear will have two large cast lugs on the top side where the upper control arms attach.

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
The 12 bolt passenger car differential cover is on the left and the 12 bolt truck cover is on the right.

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
I'm not good with computers or knowing what all this URL/IMG code is.There was some tutorial here on using Photobucket and that worked for me.I know there are other hosts but I got one figured out and that's as far as I got.It resizes pictures to whatever is required on this site and elsewhere.I know once you upload pictures there, you use the bottom code that pops up when you hold the curser over the image. You do the right click and hit "copy",then come on your post, right click, and hit paste. That's it,if I didn't forget something

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
I use photobucket for mine. And SpecialK's directions sound about right. Once you've downloaded the pics from your computer to photobucket, you can add titles and other history to each pick. When you want to link to the pic on photobucket you go to the image code under the pic and click on it. It will tell you its been copied. Then just paste it in to your post on here. Looking forward to the PICs. Good luck. Theres a couple more 67-68 trucks for sale going up Hwy7 I looked at yesterday. A 67 Lwb, red. He wants $1500. The others a 68 SWB stepside, black. The guy wasn't there to ask about price though.

Re: RearEnd Upgrade?
When measuring bolt patterns, always remember it is outer to center NOT center to center. As Longhornman would say," I'd bet a kick in the daddy parts" you measured center to center and got 4.75" insted of 5."
