Hello everyone, my name is Mike and I've been lurking around the forums for about a month now waiting until the chance that I could finally introduce myself. As of today I'm now the proud owner a nice little 68 Stepper. I was on my way to my mom's house this morning in East Texas for Thanksgiving and just as I entered the city limits this truck was just sitting there with a huge sale sign on it that caught my eye. I took my wife and kids to my mom's house, dropped them off, and went back to take a closer look at the truck. I took a quick walk around and looked inside just as it started to rain and I wrote down the number of the person that was selling it. I gave him a call a little after we finished eating Thanksgiving dinner and just before the Dallas Cowboys game came on. The owner agreed to meet me because I was only in town for today and later tonight I was heading back home to Dallas. I guess it was my lucky day because me and the owner ended up talking and having a great conversation and in the end we came to an agreement on the truck!!!! This turned out to be a great Thanksgiving!!!! Here are few pics, sorry they are so bad... I took them with my camera phone in the rain. And the 350 and powerglide automatic tranny drives GREAT!!!!

WELCOME!!!Looks like a great start to a project.The rear fenders are later model but you probably know that after "lurking" for a month.What are your plans?

Nice starter project. It looks like someone has already swapped to a 5-lug rear. Just put a 5-lug front disc conversion, and your good to go.

What kind of plans do you have for it?

I believe those are 6 lug rims as well.
But I still applaud the vintage and model.

If you are talking about the ones on the rear, those were only available on 1/2ton 2wd trucks which were 5-lug.

Anywho...nice looking ride. Great platform to get started.

(just ditch that air cleaner ASAP. The foam element can ignite if you backfire thru the carb)

Good looking truck. Drive it a while, enjoy it and figure out what you want to do with it. I am still trying to figure out what I want the end result to be on my trucks.

I enjoy driving them to much to have them torn down for a long time.

thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I really dont have any big plans for it right now off the bat. My first tasks will be doing the front end conversion to 5 lug and changing out the wheels, nothing too fancy and getting that gas tank out the bed and underneath. I will have to find someone here in DFW to do the gas tank for me because i have absolutely no idea how to do this myself. I've decided to name the truck after my grandmother that passed away. I'm going to call it Beta Mae. As my grandmother got older the more and more she kept going and never seemed to quit. She grew stronger with age and that's exactly what this truck represents. I will have to have it and drive it for a while before I decide what i want for the long term goal. I think I'm going to keep it pretty stock and not get to wild with it because I like the old nostalgia of it and will most likely go with a nice black satin finish with some Coys.

If the 1950 that is posted on the passenger's window is anywhere CLOSE to the price you paid.... even doubled....then you scored. Even if the motor blows next week.

After I tried to figure out what's hanging off of the right side of your heater on the fire wall, I started to compare what you have and the pile of parts I started with this time...And my truck was a Texas truck, as well.

Believe it or not I talked the guy down to $1700, so it I truly believe that I SCORED big time on this one!!!!! Wifey not too happy because it's so close to Christmas but I tried to explain to her that you just don't come across deals like this everyday!!!!! you have to strike while the iron is hot LOL.

In my area yes you scored big, other parts of the country from what i read here its about an average price which i find hard to even emagin.

There are 2 guys here that make under bed fuel cells for these trucks, fuel cell guy, and David Boyd, do a search on them and you'll learn a lot about it.

David boyd does a group buy about every 6 months, heres a couple of links to start.:

good looking truck. looks like its a 67 "small window" cab with the 73-up rear fenders.
but does look like someone already added power brakes which is nice.
its a good deal to me! to me id swap a couple things out and drive the sucker!!

is it possible to just change out the rear fenders and bed step and not replace the entire bed? I like the steel bed floor being that I plan on spraying in a bedliner instead of having wood

Oh, and as mentioned....change out the air cleaner asap and look at replacing the rubber hoses for the fuel and the filter asap as well....the rubber hoses don't hold up to today's gas and can leak on the headers and really ruin your day

Congrats on your new purchase! You got a sweet deal! Tell your wife at this point no matter what you do to the truck it will only gain in value as opposed to purchasing a new truck and have it continuely decrease in value. With just a little work and a small investment off the right parts you could double your money very easy. Glad to have you aboard!

thanks for the advice guys! for now I have it parked at my mom's house in East Texas and hopefully i can go get it in a few weeks and bring it back to DFW. Would it be easier to go to my local pick n pull to find all new hubs and everything i need to convert the front to 5 lug or check into ording something from lmc instead? to start off with I plan on finding some rallies to mount and ride for a while until I decide what to do long term. I been reading here on the forums with some of the difficulties mounting Coys so I might be leading more towards the Eagle Alloys 225 as my final selection
