Cam selection
The time has come! I've got a set of 350 vortec's from a 99 subarban. I'm picking up an edelbrock performer intake for the vortec's along with a edelbrock 1406 electric choke carb. After talking to my uncle that owned my truck before me, I learned that the bottom end has roughly 40k on it. It's .030 over but he couldn't remember if he put flat tops in it or not. Since there is no blowby or any signs of problems i'm going to go ahead and put the heads intake and carb on this shortblock. I've got my eyes set on two different camshafts from comp cams
the 268H and the 270H. I am pretty sure that i have 3.07 rear gears but will be checking this weekend while i'm serviceing the tranny and rearend along with installing trailing arm and panhard bar bushings. Ok well back to my question what do you guys think of the 268H and 270H?? Thanks in advance!

Power-wise, from what I can see, you can't really beat an XE-series cam like the XE262 or XE268...the 268 is really close to the Vortec's unmodded lift limit, though.
Some people say, though, that you're looking at longevity issues with an XE series cam...apparently they're right at the limit of what you can do with a flat tappet hydraulic cam.

I just put a XE262 in my truck 2 weeks ago and have not even had a chance to try it but I think I will be happy once I get it set up. I would post this question over in the engine forum for more responses!. Lots of knowledgable guys over there for input.

My uncle, a car nut, hates comp cams. He says they were made to fool NHRA rules, that they slam the valves open fast. He says stick with a good Vette cam. And believe me, he would know.

Oh and he used to have a '69 that he built a 383 stroker for that ran in the low 13's.

get in touch with Edelbrocks tech line and see what cam they match with their intake and carb. I run a matched set from them in my 402 and am really happy with it.

GM performance cams are antiqauted designs from the 1960's. Almost any aftermarket cam of compareable size will make much better power. For the street, I really like enegizer cams. 266 for a mostly stock motor, or a 272 for about 5000 rpm or a 278 for 5500-6000. The 284 is a POS IME. Stay away from anything over 110 LSA (most GM cams) unless you have FI using a non-programmable computer or a motor below 300 ci.

what about crower cams? I haven't heard of many people using them, but the specs look simalar to some of the crane cams. Is there anyone here that has a lot of miles on a XE cam? I have heard from a lot of people that they probably won't last too long, but has anyone have one that has put enough miles on it to wear it out?

Well.....I think i've decided on my cam for the price you can't beat a Summit cam & lifter set (under $80) I'm looking at Summit's
SUM-K1103. I've decided to not go with a XE series because of the reliability issues. So what do you guys think of the SUM-K1103? Sorry to be a pest!
