Dome Light in Cab
1970 Chevy P/U C10
I cannot get the dome light to go on when the doors open. Is this a flaw or am I missing something? I have checked to make sure there was current going to it and I did replace the fuse....what am I missing? Does it take a specific light? Thank you! |

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Does it have pin switches in the door jam? Cheaper trucks didn't have them.

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Checked the switches on the side dorrs and they push in and bounce out beautifully. I am wondering if I put the right light in. Which one should it be?

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Does the light come on when you turn it on from the headligh switch? If so then the problem is in the door switches.

Re: Dome Light in Cab
The light does not come on when I turn the headlights on......Last time I checked the wiring, power was going to the dome light.... So maybe I just need to replace the switches??

Re: Dome Light in Cab
I was looking into my dome light and couldn't get it to work either. I put the voltage meter on it and no power. Come to find out it was screwed into place with the wires clipped. Great job by PO. Maybe start with the obvious. Bulb, voltage....

I never knew they were supposed to come on when you open the doors.

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Also, doesn't the light housing ground to the roof/screw hole. If you have power at the bulb and the bulb is not blown, sounds like a ground problem.

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Checked all the above and it is not working. I bought a fuze looking bulb that was in there previously but I am not sure that it correct. What sort of bulb does it take?

Re: Dome Light in Cab
That is called a festoon bulb. The replacement may be blown. You said that you have power to the socket, so it must be the bulb. If you replaced it with an LED bulb, you may have the polarity switched (+ hooked to -) in which case all you will have to do is turn the bulb 180*.

Re: Dome Light in Cab
Using a multimeter or test light, you should see voltage at both ends of the bulb if the bulb and fuse are good.
If you can't turn on the lamp from the headlight switch, ground the white wire at the switch connector. If the lamp lights now, the switch is suspect. If the lamp still doesn't light, you have a break in the white wire at some point. Try the same test at the door switches. The lamp should light when you ground the white wire if the wire is good.
