timing problem
i was changing my intake gasket so i took out the distributor.. when i put it all back together i tried turning the truck on and it would just backfire and the carb blows gas out.. im thinking its the timing , i probably put the distributor in wrong.... does anyone have an idea on how to fix this problem.. or if it can be something else??? please help i need it for work tomorrow!! thanks

i would set the motor to tdc then reinstall the distributor. sounds like its 180 out or its too far advanced

Pull the no.1 spark plug and put your thumb or a piece of tissue in the plug hole. Roll the engine clockwise until the compression blows your thumb or the tissue out of the hole. Then continue to roll the engine CW until the mark on the balancer lines up with the timing pointer at zero.
This will be TDC on no.1 Then pull the distributor cap off and check where the rotor button is pointing. If the rotor is pointing anywhere but the no. 1 spark plug then you'll need to reset it to point to no. 1. If it's pointing at the no.1 then you need to check the firing order to see if some wires are crossed. See the diagram below.

Why would I have to roll the engine if all I moved was the distributor?? Sorry I don't know much about timing

because its easier to set the motor to tdc and set the distributor to #1. and because from the sounds of it when you reinstalled the distributor you didn't reinstall it to where the motor was sitting. did you remove the cap and mark where the distributor was set before you reinstalled the distributor?

with a 5/8 socket on the crank bolt. rotate clockwise until you are on the compression stroke and then line up the mark on the balancer with the 0 mark on the timing tab on the timing cover
