help on axles
am converting my 2wd truck to a 4wd truck. what axle is best for very light off road use D44 or D60? passenger or driverside drop, and finally what is a good divorced transfer case to use.

Well if I was converting 2x4 too 4x4 I would get a donor 1Ton Chevy P/U and swap in that drivetrain. Sounds like you may beable to do a 3/4T D44 front but if you get a D60 then you'll never have to worry about breaking the front...Unless you let Johnnywagon drive it!! hahahaa

What is the truck you are converting?A 3/4t donor truck will be much easier (plentiful) to find.Honestly,a Dana 44 or 10-bolt is all you need if you don't use huge tires or do extreme four wheeling.Talking cost,you will spend a lot less going 3/4t.that's what you have now,right?GM trucks were passenger side drop until the IFS trucks came out.If you use the later driver side drop t-case you'll need a front axle from a Ford.I do suggest finding a donor truck rather than digging up every piece.There's way more than you may think.In fact,the best way to go is swap your body onto a 4wd frame.If you have a 73-87 there are plenty of cheap 4wds with crapped-out bodies.

I am converting my 72 international harvestor. It is a3/4 ton. Leafs on all corners.my landlord won't let me have another truck to tear apart . So what do I need from a junkyard donor?

you will need all of the chassis parts (axles, springs, hangers, drive shafts, transmission, transfer case, steering box, etc..)
That's why it would be easier to swap you body to another 4x4 chassis that's already setup...

if i keep with an older chevy straight front it shouldnt be to much of a problem. the engine and tranny i am rebuilding both from a chevy. Transfer case is going to be a divorced so it is much easier there. Here is a parts list of what i will be getting from a donor chevy. Front axle and springs, transfer case and crosmember just going to cut it from the frame. driveshafts i will worry about later
