Posi Spring question ? pls help.
Hey all, a buddy at work just told me about his budge posi for a 94 pickup he used to have. According to him the late 80's early 90's Camaro's that did not come with a posi unit, came with a spring to keep tension on the spider gears.
I had never heard of it. He found the GM part number 231260 - about 16.00 Said he stuck one in his pick up with a open diff. Not as effective as a actual posi for high perf stuff. But for a cheap/fun upgrade on my 68, sounds like the ticket. Just wondering if any of you have tried this trick, or have any more info. I ordered the spring from the dealer I work for. Will post updates.

I am really interested in seeing this! I have a 12 bolt with a 4.10 open diff. and was considering ordering a new limited slip set up but I think that I will wait and see how this turns out!!!

Sorry to be the party pooper here, but if that spring puts any substantial amount of load on the side gears, I can imagine bad things happening where the backside of the gears rubs against the inside of the differential case. Of course if you only drive in a straight line and both your rear tires are exactly the same diameter you won't have any problems.
This isn't an issue with a normal posi because the wear is taken on the clutch plates rather than on the gears and case. Ray

There is a washer back there, between the side gear and the case, but point made anyway. I am not in favor of this "modification" either. I almost posted on this a few days ago, but I really do get tired of being the wet-blanket.

Shoot me the pn & the pic of the part....he!!, Ill try it one time It dont sound like a drag race deal, but I run the streets of Rock Island After a few yrs playin, I learned that an open diff VW, with a few extra shims in the spiders could flat Azz walk a straight line (with the back bumper draggin on a sand rail). crazy Al
