Need a cam recommendation
I'm building a 496 stroker for my '69 1/2 ton. I'm sure some of you have seem my posts with other questions on this engine. But I'm looking for camshaft recommendations. I'd like to get 575 horse and 575 lb-ft of torque out of her. I'd prefer to stay hydraulic-flat tappet, but am willing to go to a solid lifter design. I'd love to convert to roller, but can't afford it. The engine will be about 10.2:1 compression, backed by a TH400 w/full manual valvebody, 12-bolt rear stuffed with either 3.73's or 3.55's, haven't decided yet. Any ideas out there?

I will assume that you plan on using some kind of aftermarket heads on this motor as it will help you reach the power level that you want. That being the case, the Edelbrock performer RPM packages are pretty hard to beat. They claim to get well over 500 hp with a 30 over 454 with 10:1 compression. It takes alot of guess work out of comming up with a good combination of parts.
Edelbrock's web site has a parts listing to build an engine to their hp levels. Including dyno printouts for these engines. I have used their parts for engines that I have built in the past and have always had very good luck with them and no failures. Just my opinion. Hope this helps. Most of the cam manufacturers have a help line and is a much better source than a message board for an unusual combination. Call Comp, call Crane, call Isky. Get a recommendation from all of them, compare, and pick the one in the middle! Lots of trick grinds exist in their catalogs, or they can custom grind, compared to what is listed in the mail order guys catalogs, and prices aren't much different. In order to save a few bucks, you might be able to buy the cam manf. direct, then get other components (lifters, springs, pushrods) from your mail order vendor of choice.
My "guesstimate" is a cam in the 242 deg range at .050 on 108 LSA with .600 lift. Let me know what they recommend.
