Ok so this is my first engine build and I have a 327 from a 64 impala I think. It has the lower end done...not completely sure on what crank pistons or anything.
but for the top end i was planning on doing http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CMB-08-0034/ I don't know what a good cheaper carb i should use so please help with that. is this going to work for the carb? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-0-80555C/ Engine dress up http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRO-141-758/ I was thinking this disturber but im not sure about it, as far as advances etc. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850001R/ cheap headers http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9006/ Water pump http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFF-1449NA/ Starter http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFF-3510A/ Alternator http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFF-7935ABULL/ so other than that i dont know the rest yet...so I know I missed alot so ask and please give advice and tell me if these will work and what else I need. can I use my old fan? do I need to buy pulleys? flexplate? will my old 4 speed mount up (on an inline 6 now) ok so any questions just ask........im planning on doing this next weekend or just after if anyone is around eugene/albany area of oregon thank you all in advance

Re: Engine Build
if you get the cheaper painted headers, like me, make sure and repaint them with the 2,000 degree paint BEFORE you put them on...

Re: Engine Build
you have to get self aligning rocker arms for the Vortecs! push rods are the same as a stock small block. you might be able to get a good set off a 96-00 chevy/gmc truck at a junk yard for pretty cheap on the rockers

Re: Engine Build
So I was also looking at some comp cams for some increased power and I love the rough idle sound and on jegs they said that the biggest I could go without changing anything is this one
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL12-211-2/ but on the summit website says this. "Designed for hot street/strip cars, these COMP Cams Magnum series cam and lifter kits require a higher compression ratio, rear-end gear ratio, and stall torque converter than stock." I dont know how to check my compression ratio or exatcly what I should be trying to get. IM NOT BUILDING a race truck or anything like that. I just want to have some fun with it when I want. I was reading this thread below and It got me a little spooked about compression ratio, should I be worried about what it is talking about? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=440319

Re: Engine Build
I went with a comp cams 260 on my 327 with the vortec heads. When I got my Vortecs I do believe I read that they have lift limitations with the stock springs. You dont want the springs binding @ full lift. You can also get your rockers off Ebay pretty cheap.

Re: Engine Build
From what I've read the problem is that when you go over the recomended lift the spring retainer smashes the valve seal, causing oil leakage/burning. Here is a thread that a guy on here wrote a month or two ago. Go towards the end and you can read about the clearance problems he had and how he solved it.

Re: Engine Build
Forgot to mention, I've also read that the vortecs don't flow anymore past .480, so a bigger cam doesn't net you any extra HP. I had a thread going a while back and some guys told me my cam is about the biggest you would want to go, it's a comp cams xe268h. Here is a video of how mine idles/runs, for the rest of my specs look in my signature.

Re: Engine Build
I like the sound of your idle! so the cam I am looking at is a little less lift than your so it should be fine right? so i forgot do i need to change anything for it to work?
