Which engine driven kit?
I have a '95 GMC with a 305 and I want a engine driven compressor. I'm tired of waiting to air up and it's my part time driver. Where's a place to get a good bolt-on kit? I was going to piece on together and have a guy fab a bracket for it but he said it'll be better and not much more for a kit. Also it'll all be new and bolt-on stuff.

I don't have the skills to fab up a mount myself, but I found a guy who sells a york mount that will bolt to the driver's side head (sbc) and runs off the ps pulley (need a double grove pulley). I just ordered it this weekend and he said it'll be about 2 weeks until it's shipped. There's pro's/con's to either electric or edc, and given what I've read, I'd rather try my chances with a edc for the faster fill times and no amp draw.

Re: Which engine driven kit?
Not sure on the amount you want to spend.... but if you want a compressor you won't be disappointed by, get an Oasis.

Re: Which engine driven kit?
yeah but damn that 1000.00-1500.00 price makes my wallet shiver as cheap as viair dual packs are these days 2 5gal tanks with (4) viair 400s would be money!

Re: Which engine driven kit?
The oasis reminds me of that dually C10 with no bed laying frame... "so ugly it's cool" type of thing.

That can be said about allot of things. I like the dually you speak of. I thought it was inventive.

Re: Which engine driven kit?
I have had a EDC on my 51 Styline for about 4 years now. I got it for free off of an old Volvo. I dont have an oiler on it, or an inline wate rseperator. I had an air filter on it for a while, but it finally broke from vibration. It works better than ANY compressor ive used and I have had 4 bagged cars. I will NEVER settle for an electric compressor again. I have never had to service it, and its always worked perfectly. If fills a 10 gallon tank from 145 to 185 psi in under a minute at idle. I have 1/2 inch lines with 5/8 valves and at freeway speeds it will keep up with contunuous fill dump full dump fill dump...

Ugly? Well, ya... But then, what AC compressor is "pretty"? Once I get mine installed, the only people that would even think it's "cool" are the ones that know what a York is and why I'm even using it. Everyone else will probably wonder why a big ugly box with a pully is there...

Re: Which engine driven kit?
Its just big square chunk of metal with a pulley that sits up high in the engine bay. I would have loved to mount it down low, but it would have hit my steering. I am still trying to figure out the best way to mount it in my 51.
When I had a 235, it was mounted down low under the alternator and it didnt look too bad. Last edited by blown240; 01-20-2011 at 11:57 AM. |

Re: Which engine driven kit?
but you got to ask your self is it necessary? Do you really want to beat your custom that you have so much invested in I'm only in my early 30's and am over the whole drag it fad. Run a single or dual 5 gal 1/4" or 3/8" valves and line and call it a day... roll it low park it flat and enjoy a trouble free sweet ride my viairs lasted me over 8 years

Re: Which engine driven kit?
Its true that Viairs last a long time. I have a 450c on my 51 that is under the floor that I use as a backup. Its been there 5 years and has gotten VERY wet and still works great. I just hate listening to it, and would rather have an EDC fill in 30 seconds what would take the viair 5-10 minutes to fill. Plus you dont have to worry about an EDC killing your battery. Even though the engine has to be running to fill...

Re: Which engine driven kit?
Did you "plug the peehole"? You need to take the bottom off and plug the hole that would be used to oil an AC system. Simply tap it out and put a screw in it. That keeps the oil in the crankcase of the compressor and not all thru your system.
