Wink i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

I find it amazing that when you say something like " oh his truck is a two wheel drive " {talking about square body chevys} and you get " is it front wheel or rear wheel drive.... as far as i know the only front wheel drive square bodies are the 4x4s that dropped a rear driveline and had to put it in 4 wheel to make it home [may or may not have dont that before] i heard that question asked 5 times in my autoclass TODAY.

correct me if im wrong

I mean no disrespect when I say this, but my guess is the guys are young. The current generation doesn't really know that trucks were always RWD if they were 2wd.

I completely agree. I'm now in my 4th semester of college auto classes and there are still a few people in these classes that aren't very familiar with things that seem so simple to us "car guys".

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

I had a great running 76 Caddy El Dorado that I was going to use the power train for a front wheel drive 72 truck. The idea was to be able to slam it to the ground and not have to c notch the frame and carve up the bed. It was going to be a one of a kind Chevy El Dorado10. I wrecked the Caddy at the demo derby and used the back axle for a bed trailer.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

The front wheel drive pickups from what I could hunt up and please correct me if I'm wrong , Are all custom built . I have seen custom built pickups that had what looks to be a trailer grafted on for hauling cars.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

yah ive seen one of those "trailer trucks" in person before. looked just like the red one. i couldnt believe what i was seeing at first, a truck with a trailer built on the back, i had to look under to see just how long they had made the driveshaft and did both wheels drive, WTF! I couldnt believe it was fwd then., especially being five lug.

couldnt see how they could just run it in 4wd on the hihgway anyway for towing if they had done it that way. and the only other thing i can figure is a cadi eldorado 472 bb under the hood along with the tranny custom-fit up there, but would you expect the tranny to hold up from a eldorado in your towing rig?
id like to know more without jackin the thread or anything.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

A friend of mine has one of those motorhomes. It has a fuel injected Olds 455 on a Tornado based transaxle.

There was the Dodge Rampage, but many of you would argue that it is not a truck.

You are absolutely correct. No factory built front wheel drive square bodies.

I saw black flamed fwd truck 2 months ago at the Daytona Turkey Rod Run, even spoke with the older dude that drove it briefly.
To be honest I like it better in the pics than in real life. I though it was ugly as %EW$#@!

yea, until u wash out because ur weight load is now like 90/10..... why n the hell would u ever make a truck fwd unless u drive in reverse 24/7 or load things only on the hood??? what a dumb idea.

where do u want weight?? OVER THE DRIVE TIRES yet keeping the closest to a 50/50 weight dist.

ONLY REASON FOR A FWD TRUCK:::: mommy and daddy own the towns most popular company and feed me money rather than attention.

done.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

I can say I've run my K5 on the front diff only after I turned my rear shaft into a two distinct pieces. I did it crawling a rockpile on a mountain trail almost 100 miles from home. After the required 2 1/2 hour winch session I got pulled to the top of the pass and drove home from there. You couldn't tell it was missing.

The GMC front wheel drive motorhome used the Toronado FWD drivetrain with the 455 olds engine. The are still highly sought after today.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

I lost the rear pinion bearing on a 79 chev with a 4 inch lift/33s I had 325 miles from home, jacked up in parking lot, pounded rest of pinion out, stuffed hole with Comfort Inn towels and duct tape, inserted carrier & axles, new oil and drove home in FWD @ 55 mph. It was a looooonnnngggg drive.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

The girl that works at the coffee stand at my work asked me if my truck was a FWD, and also tried to tell me that all 2wd trucks are FWD. Its a good thing shes extremely sexy other wise we would of had problems.

Re: i find it amazing ... front wheel drive truck??

i had a guy i wored with had a 78 or 79 4wd square that was front wheel drive. something in the transfer case was designed to do that. we put lock out hubs in thinking that he was gonna get better fuel mileage went to back the truck out of the garage and it wouldnt move at all. locked the hubs in and the thing backed right out of the garage
