best guesses on how many swb '68 CST 396's built?
I picked up an original '68 shortbed fleetside CST truck over the weekend.
396/T400, tilt, buddy buckets, a/c, ps, pb truck. Needs to be restored. I've looked for one for awhile, just wondering on the rarity if any. I know...no pics...yet SC

I have a guess, but it's in .jpg format. I'll post it after you post yours.

Re: best guesses on how many swb '68 CST 396's built?
there are no real production numbers.
GM did keep % numbers, but there is NO WAY to know the numbers on your model of truck. Example... IF GM said that there was 15% CST trucks, that would mean 15% of all trucks that were able to get the CST package... that would be all C/10, K/10, C/20, K 20, C/30... plus, that would cover short fleet, long fleet, short step, long step, cab and chassis... and on and on. Then they'll say 20% got 396. Again... that would be all C/10, K/10, C/20, K 20, C/30... plus, that would cover short fleet, long fleet, short step, long step, cab and chassis... and on and on. 5% got the buckets... that would be all C/10, K/10, C/20, K 20, C/30... plus, that would cover short fleet, long fleet, short step, long step, cab and chassis... and on and on. There is no way to tell how many shortbed fleetside CST 396/T400, tilt, buddy buckets, a/c, ps, pb were built. (the tilt was added later) |

Re: best guesses on how many swb '68 CST 396's built?
Check that overall number of 396 trucks and figure SWBs would be the smaller portion. Most would have been C/20s & C/10 LWBs. There were C/20 & 30 Longhorns and pretty many, maybe about the same portion as SWBs,C/30 cab & chassis. I'd guess around 15%
I picked up on the tilt, too. They were introduced in '69,but a nice addition. My '67 will have one.

I had one like that with a tach as well- I have seen one other equipped like that in 25 years of looking.

Re: best guesses on how many swb '68 CST 396's built?
Yeah, I've wanted one ever since I followed Early Classic's restore of one back in Classic Trucks mag in 2000. I just sold my '72 GMC K25, and needed a new project...after I finish the gasser this year.
Yeah yeah...I'll get some pics up as soon as I get back down to my brother's farm.
