I use the ones with the coil spring around the handle. They last a lifetime.
But, for a huge majority of slag removal (I do a LOT of stick welding), I use one of these... on one of these... I often burn 10 pounds of welding rod a day so I don't like to waste much time monkeying with slag removal.

i have found a needle scaler works better than a slag hammer. the mini harbor freight model works pretty good and see a lot of use.
