My new toys

I've been posting to this board for a couple of months now. I bought my GMC in early February and I'm slowly getting it fixed up. I also just blew my yearly bonus on a new fancy digital camera.

My truck is a 2WD 1972 GMC Sierra Grande longbed with a 350 (not original). It has the extremely rare front disc brake _delete!!!!_ option (notice the 6 lugs, not 5). Apparently, this was fairly common in the northwest for farm trucks. The interior is pretty beat up, so thats high on my list of fixes. The truck also has leaf springs with the heavy duty leaf spring option (bouncy!).

You can see a little bit of my 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass in one of the pictures (its longer than the truck ). That was my daily driver in high school and college, it belonged to my grandparents and it only has 80,000 original miles on it.

Second Picture

Picture of the side. The paint isn't as nice as the camera makes it seem.

71-72 trucks have disk brakes. Period. It was not and option. Sounds like your truck really is not a 71 unless, someone has swaped to a 6 lug set up for some reason unknown. . .

But anyways, you do have a very nice looking truck, and outta be a blast.

The black was not an option, it was on all 71/72 GMC trucks. THe blue and white one you can see the recessed area for the black paint. Pretty common for it to be all rubbed off by now, but the green one looks (from this angle) to have a 69/70 grill on it.
I agree with RCDVL on the discs...onless you have an option sheet or build sheet to say otherwise, something has been swapped. Bee it chassis or just the brakes, they came with 5 lug and discs.
I'm noticing there are no GMC emblims on the hood, nor holes for them. Probably not the correct hood, good sign of tampering.

The hood had the emblems removed and the holes filled. The truck has been painted, up where the front eyebrows are removed you can see the new old paint a bit. The rear "Sierra Grande" emblems and holes are missing as well.

I asked the question about drums on the board before, and most people said something was wrong. Of course, one guy had seen that before and I've had two local shops (a muffler shop and a radiator shop) claim to have seen many of them. The claim is that this was a northwest farm special. Personally I don't know for sure. The setup is 67-70 from all appearances, but the frame and body VIN are identical and from 72. I agree the drums could be an add-on, but someone went to a lot of trouble to swap the rear over to a 6-lug setup as well. With the amount of grime on it, the drums have been on there a long time.

It doesn't matter too much because by this summer it will have 4 wheel 6-lug discs. I didn't notice the drums until I got it home, but I was only worried about getting good sheetmetal since I don't know how to weld or paint stuff.

The grill does have some black left on it, not enough to be visible from the camera.

It is a bit eerie not knowing anything about the truck. With the Olds, I could tell you how many mufflers or tires or even oil changes it had. My grandmother kept all of the records on it. The odometer in the truck didn't work when I got it, the engine isn't stock, and who knows what else has happened to it. The PO only had it for about 9 months and then decided to buy a Blazer instead. Of course, he didn't ask any questions about the truck either.

Your truck looks like a good project truck. Can't go wrong with one of these.

My truck (well the one I get Saturday) looks a lot like the green one except needs disc brakes, a/c, new gas tank, etc....
