whWHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO DEAL WITH TROUBLE SPOTS
We all know about them there rust trouble spots.. what have you all done to eliminate th esame rust 40 years from now?. someone told me to fillmy cab corners up with 2 part foam.... i was just gonna undercoatthe hell outa 'em and drill some drain holes!!!!

Undercoating works well, and the best Ive heard of is that sprayable body wax that never completly hardens. Its supposed to seal up all the nooks and crannys especially in the rocker panel areas.

Another idea for us in the rusty belt area is the screened in cowl to keep the area from clogging/ rust formation in that area. Undercoating the entire under side of the cab would even help keeping road noise down too.

I drilled a hole in the back of each rocker panel so i can wash them out. I also pour some sort of rust killer from NAPA (works real good) in the rockers and cab corners.

Cut off the drip rail, so it doesn't leak down the a pillars onto the floor
Use a shaved cowl so leaves and crap doesn't get stuck in the cowl/vents POR 15 all the crap I had to replace Park it inside and don't drive in the snow/salty roads. |

I wouldnt use any spray foam, that will just hold moisture in those areas. I used some stuff that's made specifically for rust prevention, I cant remember what it was called, it's supposed to not only convert any existing rust but it also prevents the surface from rusting in the future. It goes on clear and turns black as it cures, it leaves a slightly rubbery coating when its cured.
I coated all the surfaces that usually rust like the cab corners, cab supports, I even used some around the windshield while it was out and before I painted. I used a spray bottle to get in areas I couldnt get to with a rag or brush like inside the rockers, inside the vents in the cab. When I took my truck apart I washed out every hollow area that could hold dirt, I took the cowl off and shoved a hose down each vent and washed out tons of leaves, dirt, pine needles, mouse nests, all sorts of crap came out, after it dried for a couple weeks and I sanded what I could reach I sprayed the rust converter in all those areas. I sprayed the insides of the doors as well. I would really stay away from spray foam, it will hold moisture a long time! Just make sure all the drains are clear and check them once in awhile, they will plug up pretty fast if you drive it a lot or park it outside. |
