Setting roller rockers
CAn you set up rollers while the engine is running or is it not rtecommended. I have a set installed on my 350, i set them up at zero lash plus 1/4 of a turn to start with.

I go one halve of a turn, but a quarter should be fine. I've never tried adjusting them while the engine is running.

thanks randy, once i get my carb i might fire it on the stand just so I can here it run. It will be a while before my truck is road ready

I LIKE TO SET UP MY ROCKERS (BOTH TYPES, ROLLER & STAMPED) ON THE STAND, WHILE I'M BUILDING AN ENGINE & DON'T USUALLY HAVE TO READJUST THEM, BUT I HAVE ADJUSTED SEVERAL SETS( ROLLER TIPPED,FULCRUM ROLLER & OF COARSE STAMPED) IN THE TRUCK WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING. JOHN

I dont like adjusting them with the motor running. Gets oil all over the place and stains the headers even when you use those clips which dont really fit roller rockers anyway . Plus with big cams and exhaust that doesnt quite do much besides take the edge off its hard to tell when they start ticking when you back the adjuster nuts off.

my cam is not overly big, 224 i and 234 e 465 lift on i and 488 on e. gonna get a geare drive next week cause i like how they sound. thanks for the help guys.

So tell me in details how to adjust them with engine on the stand. When your talking about zero lash, what are you talking about? Is the piston up at TDC, both valves closed?

on the cran website they have a page telling you how to adjust them. watch the exhaust valve on the cyl you are adjusting when it just starts to open you set intake. i went until i had no more up and down movement of the pushrod, then 1/4 turn. then turn engine over til exhaust opens and closes and then intake is just about closed and set the ehaust valve.

Dean thats exactly the way I adjust the valvetrain for the very reasons mikep cited. It's also a good idea to check the geometery and all the valvetrain clearances while you at it.

I cut the top off an old valve cover..keeps the oil from flying all over..

I set mine running, & use a "windowed" set of stock covers as BigJim mentioned. As long as the eng is idling, the oil stays where it belongs.......buzz the throttle, & that SB will oil the garage wall tho! good luck,crazyL

The TDC method doesnt work well with long duration cams. The one outlined on the crane cams website works a lot better.
