292 or go to a 250?
Hey guys,
Should I keep the 292 or go with the 250? I have a 1972 C-10 I bought used. The 350 blow on the previous owner so he replaced it with a 73-83 ish 292. My trouble is there is no power steering pump or bracket. My gear box is power so I am left with this beautiful truck sitting in the drive and my wife asking me why I bought it if I is just going to set there. I found a 250 (73-83 ish also) that I could not pass up for the price thinking I would just chance them out. I can find a power steering pump bracket for it. I haven't been able to for the 292. This leave me scratch my head because some have said the 250 won't have enough power for the truck??? I don't have a clue. Also I will be taking this on 200 mile round trips a couple of times a year so gas mileage is important to me but I had truck that had to little power once and that is no good either. To try to answer some of your concerns.
1.Try the classified ads here,there will be some brackets pop up ocassionally.Or you can susbscribe and post a WTB and should find some. 2.My 250 has plenty of power for a cruiser.If you want a hot rod you will a.be modding it b.be wanting a V8 c.be miles ahead using a lighter platform to build on 3.Fuel milage will be more a factor of your driving style than anything.Most will agree that there will not be much difference in milage between the 6 cyl and V8's excepting the fact that a V8 with a decent exhuast will probably get a bit more "romping" thus reducing fuel milage. IMHO I would just find the brackets for your current engine and go with that. You will also have to change a few other things to use the 250 since there are differences.The PS pump will run you $30-50 at you LPS.You will have to source the PS brackets used.

You can use the powersteering brackets off the 250 on the 292. I used a piece of 1/8 inch plate to space the lower alternator mounting bracket up to fit the taller 292 block.

I agree. I have a 350 in mine, but the 292 in my mind is a great little motor.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all of your input. I just picked up a complete 292 this morning. You guys talked me out of changing it and I just happened on this one locally. You guys have me feeling good about this 292. I will have the old girl up and running this weekend if I don't having to work. I will post pictures soon. |

I have a '66 C10 with a 250 and a '67 C20 with a 292.
The 250 will get your C10 around. It will also get decent mileage with the right tranny/rear combo. The 292 is all about low-end grunt. It has a loooong stroke and the stock torque peak is at 1800 rpm. I've never heard of anyone getting "good" mileage out of a 292. I like both.
