12 Bolt Rear axle gears a bit rusty
I found a 12 bolt rear end with a posi...needs new brakes of course!
But it has some rust inside the housing....any tips on how to clean it up or just run it for a day with gear oil then completetly change the gear oil out with new stuff and should be good??? Any other methods out there?

Eww, grenade lock!!!! Put oil in it, run it, then change it. The grenade locker will give out before anything happens with the gears.

I know the Gov-Loc is weak, but they aren't as bad as you make it sound. My guess is thats a 70's axle, and its lasted this long.

with no horsepower and no tires they will live. Get the RPM's up and then the centrifical weights kick in and it gets ugly. But heck, I would run it till it fragged too.... you never know. Just depends on how you drive it.

Rinse it out completely thinner first. If it doesn't have one, I would epoxy a magnet on the inside bottom of the cover. Run it a little and pull the cover. Clean the magnet, add fresh oil and move on.

Re: 12 Bolt Rear axle gears a bit rusty
Well, I had an Auburn put in my '98 for $1,000 last year....I thought for $150 plus the cost of brakes I will go with this setup until it blows.

Exactly ..... then IF and WHEN she lets loose, look into the Eaton Tru-trac. I have had exceptionally good luck with these units. Especially if your not wanting to go full locker/ spool. |

Re: 12 Bolt Rear axle gears a bit rusty
Very good idea. As mentioned they aren't the strongest unit by design, but for a buck fitty, go for it.

Re: 12 Bolt Rear axle gears a bit rusty
Maybe. As long as they are quiet I will consider it. I put a Detroit Locker in another '98 I had and I had to pull it. The noise drove me crazy!
