Aftermarket tach location

I want to install a new tach in the location where a 1971 rear view mirror would go. If anyone has any photos or can suggest how to route the wiring, it would be greatly appreciated Or a photo of any other location that looks good and practical. Thanks for your time.

Re: Aftermarket tach location

I would find a location that is as close to in your line if sight while you're driving as possible. That way you don't have to take your eyes off the road as long to see what RPM your engine is at. On the steering column or on the dash or in the gauge cluster seems to be quite popular.

Re: Aftermarket tach location

Yep, I was thinking on the column but I have tilt steering and it really doesn’t fit very well there. I have an h2o, volt and oil pressure gauge screwed in under the a/c and heater control at the bottom of the dash, so really no room there either. And that location would be about the same as looking at the rear view mirror? The only reason I am even messing with it, is because I am installing a new motor and was looking for something with a little more information on the dial as opposed to stock dash gauges.

The PO installed a aftermarket tach in the instrument cluster, you might haft to do some cutting but it will keep the tach in your line of site.

I installed a tilt column also and my tach won't fit on it either. I haven't remounted it anywhere yet. When you get yours mounted make sure to post a pic.

Here's where I put the tack on the tilt colum. It's a tight squeeze, but it fits, and there's not issue with the shift lever.
