Engine finally in! What headers fit?
Ok well I finally got the engine in and need to find some headers. Has anyone tried these and know if they fit? If not, what do yall have that fits?

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
Summit branded headers carry part numbers that correspond to Flotech. There have been other posters on here who have used them and been satisfied. The price is decent.

The flowtechs fit like a surgical glove. Install pass side from top and drivers side from bottom. You might be able to do it from the top if spark plugs are out.

Also get rid of that fram filter. I'd find a Baldwin filter or even the napa gold.

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
thanks for the info! yea those plugs are old ones that were in there for painting. Do yall know if there's any problems with warping and leaking or is 5/16 a good flange thickness?

My dad used to do exhausts for a living, we still build headers and exhaust systems from time to time, he says 3/8's minimum.

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
Ok the others that I'm looking at are the ceramic coated ones from LMC. I see these have 3/8 flanges, 1-5/8 primary tube, 3" collectors, and happen to come with all hardware/gaskets.
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=146 The summit ones (flowtech?) have 5/16 flanges, 1-1/2 primary tube, and also 3" collectors. I like how the LMC ones have 3/8 flanges but I've heard that in some cases its better to have smaller tubes. Has anyone used these or have any advice?

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
I have Flowtech on my big block in my thread. Check em out. I'm pretty happy with them overall. The finish on the ceramic ones is not perfect, but they're not $500-600 like the Headmans. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for and budget.
Nothing wrong with my Flowtechs so far. $265 from Summit. If they discolor, or rust up I'll re-evaluate then.

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
The smaller primaries will usually produce more lowend torque, while the larger primaries produce more top end hp.
I know you want the thicker flange, but the 1 1/2 primaries are better suited for a near stock motor. I often thought of making 1-3/8 headers for my own truck. Here is something to play with- http://www.autolounge.net/calculator...dersizing.html |

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
Sorry about hijacking.... But for those saying to get rid of the Fram filters>
I know that there's a lot of controvery regarding the quality of the filters but I've been using them for 20 plus years with no problems. I change the oil between 3k and 5k and so far 4 of the vehicles I've had that I regularly used the Frams on had well over 200K miles on the engine before I traded them in. Only my 87 olds Calais had an engine problem. The non metal cam gear went out at around 220K. Maybe I've been lucky. |

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
The bashing comes with merit, several have cut them open and compared them to other brands. The Fram consistently does poorly in such comparisons.
http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oil...reference.html http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r218...-FILTER-REVIEW If you google you can find more reviews, and it's easy to see why the Fram is generally not well regarded. EDIT: wanted to add this letter, even the Fram engineers say Fram is not very good. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/fram1.txt Hi jack over. Quote:

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
David,
I dont think you should have a problem with the headers fitting the Vortec heads. I have vortec heads and my headers fit fine. To be sure you might want to call Summit Customer Service and ask. I did before ordering mine and they assured me they would fit.

Re: Engine finally in! What headers fit?
I have Sanderson headers and I really like them, might be a bit more $ but they dont need gaskets and they came coated, still look very nice, like new.
