Replacing the Dash

Is the dash bolted in or welded or both? I'm talking about the actual dash, not just the cluster or the dash pad.

It's both. There are 3 bolts on each side and spot welds running across in the windshield lip area. You would need to remove windshield to do it.

Thanks. That's what it looked like to me. My buddy wants to take the dash out of one of his trucks and put it in another.

I think the Factory Assembly Manual shows it to have 27 spot welds.....

from prior experience, it has at LEAST 27 ... felt like 127 when we were drilling them out.

As long as the top of the dash is not damaged, I usually cut the dash under the dash pad. I call it it cutting along the dotted line. I unbolt the front of the dash and then I weld up the new front. Cover the welds with the dash pad and no one is the wiser. I once drilled out all of the spot welds along the windshield bottom and swore I would never do it again! I've done alot of non-a/c to a/c conversions this way, also hacked dash to non-hacked dashes. Never have to remove the windsheild, just protect it from cutting and welding.

If that's the only reason....are you using aftermarket AC? If so, I'd think that using aftermarket outlets would be preferable. I had an air cab and in my opinion, the aftermarket outlets are pretty nice. If you wanted it to look vintage, you should be able to get the dimensions from an air cab, cut the holes in your dash and add the outlets. The factory AC controller will fit the hole that is already there. Aftermarket AC bulkhead connectors are way cleaner than the factory unit that takes up so much room under the hood. My new cab is a non-air cab and will be getting an aftermarket system, when the time (and money) is right.

Meanwhile, I've got a complete factory HVAC system in my garage that I will NOT be using..including the vents, plenums, etc.

I'm not dead set on using a factory style a/c, I'd just like a/c! My '69 doesn't run so I don't really have anything to use for comparison. I've never rode in a factory a/c '67-'72. From what I've been told it's comparable to a '73-'87 or worse. I've owned 4 of those with a/c (and 1 without) and they weren't the best systems out there! What aftermarket would you recommend? I've heard good things about Vintage Air...
