Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
Hi guys,
Odd question, but does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks? Reason I ask is I had the transmission on my '72 C20 completely overhauled, they fixed/changed everything. It shifts great now, very smooth drive. But the problem I have is it STILL leaks transmission fluid! The only thing I can think of after researching the topic on Google is that my driveway is on an incline. So do you guys think the transmission leak could be happening because of my parking the truck on a driveway with an incline?

Re: Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
No, I dont believe that would cause a leak... When I park on an incline, I always put the truck in neutral, apply the parking brake and make sure it holds, then put the truck in park. This is so the weight of the truck is not resting on the internal park stop in the transmission.
Where is it leaking from? Pan: A stamped steel pan may be bent or tweaked. Put a straigt edge aross the sealing surface of the pan and the trans. Try a cast aluminum one pan? Dipstick: maybe needs an o-ring gasket or upgrade to a nice Lokar piece. Rear seal: Maybe got installed crooked or got nicked putting the drive shaft in. Cheap and easy to replace. Front pump: Well then you need to take it back to the builder.... my .02 cents .... |

Re: Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
i guess it could if it was overfilled and the incline was steep might pass by the tailhousing seal ,where is the leak drip from front or rear

Re: Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
With old transmissions in trucks that sit with the nose down an incline, they tend to leak out the front seal. A rebuilt transmission should not leak at all. The whole principal of an automatic transmission is that it is a sealed unit that operates by fluid under pressure.very thin fluid. Basically,it's a hydraulic pump/valve all in one.

Re: Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
Mine's a little different, since it's a 4WD Blazer, but I have a similar problem. If I park it with the nose downhill or with the passenger side to the curb, it tends to leak. If I park it now uphill or driver's side to the curb, it's less likely to leak. Unless, of course, I don't run it for 3 or 4 days, in which case it tends to puke about 2-3 quarts of trans fluid.

Today I backed my truck up a hill and shut it off. I heard a gurgling noise while I was still in the cab coming from the other side of the firewall around where the bellhousing is. I got out and saw auto transmission fluid running down the bellhousing. I pulled my truck to a flat area and didn't notice anything. Checked the fluid and it was about halfway between full and add.

A common spot would be the driveshaft yoke seal that's internal to the transmission. It prevents fluid moving down the splines of the output shaft and leaking out of this hole

Re: Does parking on an incline increase transmission leaks?
Th400 leak at front seal....
1/ Seal tension spring popped out when seal was being drive in...no build lube on back of seal lip to hold spring in location.... 2/ Pump housing bush no replaced allowing convertor drive snout to run out and cause seal leak.... 3/ Groove on convertor neck, but seriously, what tech would reuse a grooved convertor ????? If they did that I would suspect the build itself may be suspect... 4/ Front pump to case O ring missing, not replaced or nicked on installation....
