Crossmember question???

OK guys. Still fighting the header clearance issues with our big block 68. My ONLY issue now is on the passenger side. The crossmember just behind the engine, not the transmission cross, the one just behind the engine. There is nothing mounted to it. Do I really need this crossmember? Not wanting to sound stupid but have seen several pics on here of trucks that don't seem to have this crossmember.. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Fred.

Re: Crossmember question???

That crossmember was for manual transmission trucks, they used a belhousing mount, if you have an automatic trans with the crossmember at the back if it you do not need the one you are referring too.

Thanks. That is what we thought, just wanted some more opinions. Yes, the truck was a 3 on the tree. Thanks again, Fred.

Sorry for the Hijack, but this may REALLY help me out. If I have converted from manual to a th350 auto this x member can go? It is in the way of my floor shifter linkage and I have been laying on my back for days trying to figure it out? If it can be cut out without hurting the safety of the truck my life has just gotten good again!

Re: Crossmember question???

I am thinking about taking an air hammer to the rivets.

Sweet! Those rivets are a bear, but I harbor such animosity towards that X member I look forward to hacking it like an axe murderer!

Re: Crossmember question???

Took the torch to it.. Crossmember is gone, headers are in... Now I can get back to working on the truck.
