Cam woes

Some of you may remember but back in October I changed the cam in my 427. It had a Performer RPM which was just a little bit too much. I replaced it with a Crane Powermax H272. This cam worked great but recently (about 5000 miles) I had a lobe go flat on me. I have replaced about 6 cams over the last few years with no problems so I figured with the reputation that big blocks have for eating cams it was just the odds. Well, Summit exchanged the cam under warranty and even replaced the Felpro gasket kit with it. This weekend I installed the new cam (following Cranes install instructions to the letter) and I am completely at a loss. The truck runs OK while it is parked but when I drive it there is NO power and the valve train is very noisy. Tonight I pulled the covers to try readjusting the valves and discovered at least 4 pushrods not rotating. I can only assume that this cam is f'ed up now. Anyone else had problems with Crane Cams? Am I missing something here?

I had a crane crap out on me in a SS 454 El Camino when I was about 19 years old. I always figured it was my installation although I couldnt think of what I did wrong at the time. It was the last crane cam I ordered though. Ive had really good luck with Lunati and Compcams so I stick with those guys now.

This is the first (and last time) that I have used a Crane. Somebody told me once that they provide most of the cores to other grinders so I didn't think that there wouldn't be a quality issue. Live and learn...

There is nothing wrong with crane cams..if the cause of cam failure is not improper breakin..then it is usually an alignmet or clearance problem..as in rocker bind..core shift..cam bearings installed incorrectly(especially on BBC) and the 427 is most common because of the different type of rear cam bearings..did you notice if both cams went out on the same lobes? when you preoiled(primed) did oil come out of each pushrod? did the lifters turn freely? push rods turn at first start up?

I agree with JIm that there is some other cause. I have run several Crane cams with zero failures and 100k mile performance.
