Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
I posted this on another forum.. and some of the answers I got were...well, out of touch.
I had my Truck on Ebay 3 times without a bid, tons of wathchers , last auction I had 87 watchers. I was offered a trade (65 Nova) but no bids..not even a email. I know I'm not to high on my price because I'm already taking a beating on it. Also, if you look it seems alot of Trucks are not getting action. What do you guys think? |

Unfortunately, any vehicle (or house, or horse, or anything else you're selling) is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
Hi, Mr. Green.
I can't answer your question. However, I will say the everyone is "taking a beating" in this economy. The market is set by willing buyer matching up with a willing seller. So, using that definition, you were asking too much. Regardless of the beating you were scheduling for your bank account. Another thing is geography. E-Slay seems to help kind-of "nationalize" that element. But, of course, someone in Maine may not be willing to take a gander at your truck in Az on an impulse. And, as the pros on this list will tell you, the prices of our trucks are all over the map, all over the map. Maybe the ad..or a little more data and some pics may get a better informed response for the experienced folks on the Forum.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
The economy has certianly hit all aspects of the hobby.
I love the 67-72 trucks, but I have never felt they are every worth near what most of us put in them. Most guys would rather buy a muscle car than a truck of equal cost imo.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
definitely has hit everywhere...although NOS parts seem to still be going for top dollar for the most part....every once in a while you find a deal on those now too....
But on vehicles....people with $$$ are waiting for either their dream truck when it's something like ours that's not a NEED but a WANT...they will wait for the right color, wheels, options, etc.... ...and I've seen trucks that would have sold for 25K plus sell for 10-12K recently....so people expect a killer deal or they'll keep waiting for the next killer deal. Projects aren't selling at all unless they're being basically given away for 1/4 or less value of just the parts it seems.... ...I don't watch every auction but mainly seems like the 67-72 trucks that are selling for close to their true value are in the 2-5K range...easier for more people to come up with that much cash right now.....it's harder for people to get loans and people aren't as willing to take on debt right now....and many are not as able to take out loans because they don't have as much equity in their homes/businesses as they did a few years ago....

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
Also wanted to add that a nice C20 like yours is going to need the right buyer more than other 67-72 trucks....if your truck was a shortbed cheyenne super and looked the same as it does...it would have sold for 20-25K+ likely... There is a limited market for those that appreciates longbeds and an even more limited market that wants an 8 lug C20....the "hot" trucks right now are SWB 1/2 tons...
I've seen some REALLY nice longbeds sell in california for 2-4K...rust free trucks...some with new paint and NICE parts and engines.... but shortbeds still command a better asking price. On average...from the auctions and sales I've seen...shortbeds go for 3-5K more than a comparable longbed...

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
check out this thread http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=477934&page=2
there's a longbed with low original miles and original paint that needs new upper trim but has tons of money in the engine ($6,500) and came with a new vintage a/c unit and a TON of other parts for 1,600 ...that's a STEAL...so people are looking out for stuff like that ( I know I am )

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
If the truck won't sell you are too high on the price, regardless of how much money has been put into it. As stated above there is not a big market for C-20 LWB trucks.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
I have told anyone that buy these old trucks that whether they intend to keep it sell it, they will never recover all of the time and parts invested. Especially in this economy and the price of gas these days. It's best to consider the effort a learning experience or a hobby rather than a money making investment.

Here are my numbers for the 1968/1971 short fleet rat starting exactly a year ago: Got the fully done chassis all with top of the line ECE parts, new p/s, running mild 350, TH350, two fully packed cabs (one seat), 71 front clip, nice fleet bed (all with 95% great sheet metal), and more. $3,500. Actually, I got it from a friend and I gave him a canoe worth $500 and $3,000 in cash. Over the last year, without going stupid (biggest purchase was Vintage Air for about $1,200), I put about $11,000 more in her. Seems like a lot. But, as we all know, you don't have to need too much to start the cash register dinging. My "cash in" doesn't count the cost of a couple of presents ...tilt steering from my woman, and electric windows from a pal. Now, if I cheap out with a $4,000 paint job, that's about all I'll have to put in the truck to make it worth $12,000. I'm plagued with doing stuff right. Not fancy. Nothin' new. It's a hobby.

1/2ton swb fleetsides will always draw the most cash. Take away for long bed, 3/4ton or more, stepside etc....

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
If you can't get a bid or even questions your price is to high. Even in a sellers market you will never recoup the money of a restoration, even a partial restoration.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
Most folks dont have the cash laying around for a nice restored/rodstored vehicle and havent for some time. when you see a nice truck or car sell, it is at a real bargain and the person selling is in a real hurt for some cash. we all know that buying a new vehicle is easier because of the financing and no one ( that I know of) offers financing for rebuilding a classic vehicle. I guess some would but it would be high interest at best.
This economy is affecting all of us, if for no other reason our buying power has been kicked in the shorts a couple times at best. some folks have been out of a job for over 2 years and it isnt looking like that will change soon. OP, I wish you all the luck in the world to sell your vehicle at what you need for it.

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
Dad's short step is on eBay right now and has met reserve. I realize that doesn't mean it's sold, I don't have the cash in my hands.. but it is doing pretty decent.
>> Fingers crossed <<

Re: Has the Bad Economy Hit Ebay Motors?
My opinion after reading your ad:
You tell a story of how your kids named it Mr. Green Jeans, tell story of a gentleman buying it from the widow of a friend, only 85000 miles no rust, etc. OK, then you say that you have over $8000 in work done. Now I'm askin why so much work on a low mileage cherry? No rust ever? really? Where did the $8000 go then? Full payment in five days, or is it three, says both. 12 feedback, ZERO as seller My summary: sounds fishy. If I was looking, I would pass. I would want to know that I am not going to get took, and your demands for fast payment, low feedback with zero as seller, and a rather soapy story would make me extreeeeeemly wary. 87 watching? They are watching to see if buyer got took. Modify your payment demands to allow time for buyer to arrange travel, and see the truck after purchase. The $500 down payment is fine, he has to have something to lose if he backs out. You have no real history on ebay, you have not earned trust yet. Truck looks nice BTW. JMO |

Story 100% True.. You don't believe it..don't care. Why so much work...When you got your GED they may have gone over math, and like most I wanted to put some money or fixup my truck..oh sorry, I guess you don't do that . No Rust ever? You need to get out of the rust belt 12 Feedback as a seller? Yeah, I'm not a seller... barely use ebay, should burn in hell. Ebay payment stuff..umm barely use ebay, not a seller, this is my personnel truck. Yes, I had 87 Watchers ..What the hell "see who is gonna get took?? Why did you need to be so negative?? To be honest, i wanted to see other peoples take on ebay because ahhh "I barely use it" But you basically attacked me for no reason. You don't know me? Is this how this site works?? I'm on another site where we all talk Classic Chevies and we help each other, I don't get it. You want to rip on my truck..fine whatever. You don't like my Seller standing on Ebay kind of fishy..good because I'm not a seller.Question my story? Your something else. Again, I thought this site was something cool, As you can see I don't post, been a member for a while. Last week asked what people think of classifieds and got great response on how special everyone is and you all help each other out.hmmmm. John showed me thats not so true. |
