How can you tell a NOS Tailgate from a reproduction?
Can someone please post pics to show and tell differences . |

Re: NOS Tailgate vs Repop
Easiest way if they are next to each other, pick them up. The NOS one will weight quit a bit more than the repop. If they aren't together I'm not sure how to tell them apart.

Re: NOS Tailgate vs Repop
Look at the tailgate... if it crumples under the weight of your gaze then it is a repop... They are VERY CHEAP and EXTREMELY FLIMSY... ask me how I know.....

Re: NOS Tailgate vs Repop
Not all repops are created equal. There are some that are flimsy and lighter gauge metal. I've seen them bend from a guy sitting on it. Generally those are the ones without stamped letters
However, I weighed a triplus/keyparts repo gate with the stamped letters and it weighed .1oz more than my NOS gate I had at the time. The top edge is different slightly where it fits against the bedside it looks more rolled vs square on the NOS....and as the other thread mentions the spot welds are worse on NOS than reproduction gates

Re: NOS Tailgate vs Repop
The first tailgates reproduced were inferior. The front and back panels weren't spot welded together, which makes for a weaker unit. The gauge on Tri-Plus sheet metal is the same as OEM. Both plain and lettered tailgates are made the exact same way with the letters being the only difference. I prefer OEM over repro on anything, but the repros sold today are good pieces. I sold my N.O.S. tailgate when I saw the crazy money people will pay. I have good used ones I can use. Now they go for crazy money.

Re: NOS Tailgate vs Repop
Do what I did. The 4-wheeler test. Drive a 4-wheeler in the back of your truck using ramps. If the tailgate folds in half, then it's a repop.
